[Food] Pollo Tropical - Grilled Chicken + Rice + Beans Review

Disclaimer: I am Puerto Rican, so I may be biased towards this food. You've been warned. Serious review time =[.

Price Paid: $0 but I think normal price is $5.09 or so pretax.



A few of these recently opened nearby and I've been meaning to come here. National Chicken Day seemed like the best time to go!

Chicken - has some niceeee seasoning. This is the best grilled chicken with skin I've had. It is way better than those rotisserie chickens you buy at the market.
Beans - they are beans. Whatever. Good with Rice.
Rice - deliciously seasoned yellow rice, but some of the veggies had too much of an impact on flavor sometimes. Not a negative, just different.
Sweet Bread - sweeter than Hawaiian Sweet rolls, but harder.

Overall - 5/5 really great dish and super filling due to the amount of rice and beans. Not really a great price for 1/4 a chicken + rice and beans, but for fast casual it's good. Not much else to say about this basic dish.

I also tried three sauces:

Guava BBQ - tastes like bbq sauce. There's Guava here?
Spicy Poyo Poyo - really reminds me of a sauce I've had before, but I don't like to sauce my chicken anymore unless it is wings so I didn't go in for another bite. It was fine... a bit artificial.
Pineapple Rum - 2/3 of a Caribou Lou in a sauce. Really good sweet sauce, but again I don't know what I'd use it on here.

Will come again soon to get my friends to try it out.

(Also, I tried honey on fried chicken. Better without it.)

If you ever have black beans that don't look like that, then you're eating pinto beans in black sauce or something.

It's actually just called yellow rice. Usually made with white rice but it turns yellow from the seasonings.

Honestly doesn't look good in the pic... it looked way better IRL but I took a pic as they gave it. Didn't go out of my way to get more aesthetiX.

 

Looks like they found that roll at a soup kitchen

 

It's so good and so sweet though - but not too sweet.

 

really disappointed no innuendo in this review.
