    Mountain Biking

    Any mountain bikers here?
I REALLY wanna get into it. I've only went once and even though I fell multiple times, hurts my wrists, and sacked my self a lot, it was a ton of fun.

Where I live in Canada, I'm not too far away from the Whistler mountian bike park. I don't think I'm ready to go there yet but hopefully I'll be able to experience it soon.

Can anyone recommend a cheap bike for beginners? I have no clue what I should be looking for when buying a newby bike. I heard a beginner bike is still going to be up around the $600-$800 area.

Also, general mountain biking thread. Share your stories :)

Some type of Demo 9, or ghost model.

Although they are quite expensive .

When I was younger I had a brief interest. I have a friend who's a semi-pro mtn bike racer or whatever, and his bike cost him upwards of £3,500 to put together - so it's an expensive hobby.

When I said I was interested he said I should start out with a Mongoose bike, they're very cheap but he said they'd do the job well.

Trek is a very good bike. It's well made and somewhat reasonably priced. The one I had even had a comfortable seat :p

I have a fairly nice mountain bike (800$ ~ or so), I'd suggest just hitting up your local craigslist and looking for a bike there for the cheapest option that best suits your needs.

I don't offroad much anymore considering I live in the city, but I do use it quite a bit riding to uni, the gym, ect..

I had a Trek. Loved it but the seat was very uncomfortable but definitely a solid overall bike.

I used to bike at whistler alot. I rode a kona garbonzo which I'm pretty sure is specific to whistler but don't quote me on that.

Go with Trek, you can easily find some older models for the low on Craigslist. My family has been using Trek for the past 25+ years. In fact, my parents still have their Trek mtbs from the early 90s, probably around 23-24 years old and they still work fine with normal maintenance.

I Love MTB, I would recommend purchasing an Entry level mountain bike.

I have a couple of MTB, I tend to use my Specialized Hardrock for commuting, it is an entry level mountain bike and I haven't had any problems thus far, it is much better than getting one of my other bikes stolen.

If you intend on keeping it under your bum at all times and locked away in-doors then you could spend a little more cash, if you plan on locking it up you will be carrying an awful lot of weight around as you are going to need at least 2 D locks.

Ditch the quick release unless you want to carry a stripped frame home with you, the main thing to think about is security, any lock can be broken in a matter of seconds and passers-by are to interested in how their hair is looking to stop and ask questions.
