watch the video, and then think about your friends, family, and even people you don't know but that you see at school or work

feel free to post what you think

I think I saw this my first semester of college?

I've always thought smart phones, ipads, etc. are nothing but bad news, tbh. I only say that because so often these days I see parents just hand their babies/toddlers an ipad to play on. Maybe I'm just underestimating the power of technology, but I really don't agree with raising a child on a screen. Essentially, ipads have become pacifiers.

Also, what she said was spot on about everyone being on their stupid phones ALL THE TIME. In a classroom? Fuck it, perfect time to make my iphone click a million times. Sitting next to me on a bus? Go ahead and have your loud, obnoxious, and pointless conversation. I love hearing about how you lost and couldn't find your eye-liner all morning.

Then, if you say something about it everyone claims they "Need a cellphone" whether they're 12, or 16. First off, I just want to say I never got a phone until the money came out of my pocket. Second, you don't *need* a phone. Emergency? a 1998 nokia phone with no service can still make emergency calls to 911, you're fine.

I also haven't had a serviced phone for about a year now, any time I need to text someone, I use the internet. Anytime I want to call someone, I use the internet. These suckers fork over 60 bucks a month to the cell companies to have stupid derp conversations with their "friends".

Not directed at everyone, just about 98% of America.

Very interesting. I love TED talks. I also completely agree with this.. I sit in a classroom where people pay about 50k a year to attend and watch an entire row of students on their phones during the lecture. There's more I'd like to say but I don't have time right now.

But here's a thought.. Our children are going to see everything we've ever done, on Facebook. They're going to see HD photos of themselves and their parents before they even existed. They're going to know what people said on the day they were born or what their mom did on her 22nd birthday. The current generation, I'd say everyone born after 2000 or 2005, is going to have a completely different view on life... I can elaborate more, but fuck with it.

This is exactly how I feel and when I bring it up with my friends, they always brush me off and tell me to shut the fuck up but that's probably because they're still immature kids in high school or I am smarter than the general fucktards around.

I have people to talk to but its still not the way it is suppose to be I find.

theres a small margin of people that think this way which is sad lol

I agree but at the same time I prefer virtual conversation, I'm hypocritical about it lol

We all prefer the most simplified way of doing things, I think it's almost human nature.

Some people like "virtual conversation" also because you're always able to plan what you're about to say, and a lot of times that leads to false identity. Example: A lot of kids on sythe like to act "Tough" and act like they can "lift alot bro", when in reality they probably wouldn't act as brazen if they had a confrontation face-to-face. Another example: Some dumb kid meets some girl and to impress her really exclaims his use of drugs and alcohol to make her think he's cool, when in reality he might have had a bowl shared with him, and a bud light. If he was face-to-face with her, he might feel a little more intimidated to make a stupid white lie like that.

And then on top of all of that the fact that you're simplifying all of your tasks causes you to lose out on a lot of experience that you might have had emotionally, physically, mentally, etc. Example, an experience of a real, and strong built relationship and not one based off of your 'cool dude' texting persona.

The main point is none of you really need a phone.

^ I would say I need a phone as it's convenient when reaching my parents and also my friends when I need to. Not everyones on Facebook 24 hrs so it's convenient.

But I do agree with the whole false identity.

Interesting video, you have to really think about the younger generations. I mean I think I was in the sixth grade when I got my first cell phone, my neighbor's daughter who is in second grade has one. It's crazy how "plugged-in" some of the newer gens are.

I can't tell you how much it saddens me to see so many people in my classes spend the whole time on their phones or ipads, and then complain when they don't get what the class is about.

Floyd's right on the mark about the whole image thing, not just in that being online allows you to present yourself in the way you wish people could see you, without having to show the the qualities about yourself that you dislike, but also in the sense that there's a good chance it will affect your ability to connect with people in person. Like he said, when you text (or use any means of electronic commutation, excluding facetime and phone calls) you can take as long as you want to think about your response and the things you want to say, and at times, that involves contemplating what you think the other person would like to hear. However, when you have conversations in person your responses are instinctual. You present yourself as you truly are (and as you should) when you communicate in person.
What happens to people when their means of communicating cease to be instinctual?

It's a great video i believe they showed it in school but I am not exactly 100% sure where i have seen it before.

I enjoyed this video, "communication" on the web is not true communication.

I'll watch it later, can anyone give a TL;DR version? Is she basically saying to reduce technological communication and be more social and increase face to face communication?
