Condense the media forum

Besides maybe getting rid of video clips, I don't think much needs to change here. I definitely don't like the idea of combining it all into one forum though. That would be too confusing, I like how it's organized now.

 

I've always had the same feeling as Jack Goff, going into sub-forums is too much effort.

What happens when I want to post a video.. a music video.. does it go into Music or Video.. what about a Movie that has a song in it and it's a short clip of it... Music, Video or Movie? What about a T.V. programme that has a short video clip of a song. Example: Big Bang Theory (t.v.) short clip of soft kitty song. Video or Music or T.V?

Like you can pick either one or the other, but at the end of the day all of them overlap. Considering the section has a lack of interest, it might be that the multiple sub forums is preventing engagement, because people are confused. Just collapse it, rename Multi-Media, Media Entertainment, etc with simple tags and general stickies on what is best placed.

Personally if it was collapsed and I was commenting on a t.v. programme, but saw another thread that interests me that doesn't relate to t.v. I would be inclined to participate more. Having to go through multiple sub-forums.. nah.

I agree with Ryan. I think it's perfectly fine like this actually. Also I like how it's organized. I disagree removing the subsections would make it more active. It will only look more active as all sections are combined. No support, leave it as it is.

 

I don't have stats but less clicks means more views. I also can not see how it would be confusing to have all of the different topics in one forum. All the subsections are inactive and throwing them all together would still have like less than a page of active threads a day.

At the very least can we make the actual media forum accept threads? Having forums like: Media makes the whole place look dead and adds extra clicks. It looks like the TV/Movies section is slightly more active than the Music section so why not get rid of that section and make it the parent and leave Music alone. The sections are still divided so you aren't "confused" and it's easier to get to.

 

I would be fine making Tv/Movies as the parent forum with a Music section.

I personally wouldn't want to see music as a sub-forum of Tv/Movies, seems an illogical place for it to be hiding. I'd rather it on the front page if we're adamant about keeping both.

 

I just looked at all three sections and they all have threads on the first page from May. But is this really that problematic? If so then do you guys want to merge all the three sections into Media? We can set the description to include all forms of media and perhaps introduce tags or thread prefixes? I don't have any problem with doing that

As for navigation, it should be quite simple to go to the appropriate forum right now. The subforums are even clickable from the regular home page

 

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. The only reasonable solution to this "problem" is to merge video clips and movies/TV into a Movies/TV/Videos subforum. Keep Music and Movies/TV/Videos separate. The forum is very organized right now and garners quite a bit of activity in specific threads. Yes, the numbers aren't high for activity but the responses are very good qualitatively.

 

Thought was not to change the name of the media forum, just remove the TV subsection and put it in the general "Media" section. That would open it up to stuff that isn't TV / Movies but I'm struggling to think of anything else that would fit. Books maybe? Finn always wanted a books section... But that's just a random historical tidbit.

I always forget about the frontpage click thing and it does solve my main issue.

I've written a quick script to mine for who posts in a thread. I'll enhance it a bit to grab all of the posts in the first few pages of threads and see who posts the most and then @mention them here and see what they think.

 

Any update on this?

 

Started while at work and I was busy yesterday after work. I'll see what I get done tonight.

 

I only scraped the first page of each of the media subforums (to have up to date people and it was one less thing to automate).
