Please note before you start reading, that emulators/roms are NOT warez and are NOT illegal if you own the copies of the games.
Do you regret selling that once prized nintendo 64 of yours? Do you want to go back and play the classics you once cherished? Not all is lost.
Emulator: Emulation refers to the ability of a computer program or electronic device to imitate another program or device. Many printers, for example, are designed to emulate Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printers because so much software is written for HP printers. By emulating an HP printer, a printer can work with any software written for a real HP printer. Emulation "tricks" the running software into believing that a device is really some other device.
Rom: Read-only memory, a class of storage media used in computers and other electronic devices. This tells the computer how to load the operating system. Essentially, when we are dealing with N64 emulators, the ROM is the game. Say you want to play zelda ocarina of time with an N64 emulator, well, you would need to have the ROM (the game) to play it. It's similar to an N64 cartridge.
First of all, you're going to need a Nintendo 64 emulator, which would be your game system. Download it here: http://www.pj64-emu.com/downloads/startdown/34/ We will be using Project 64, as it is the most stable, and reliable N64 emulator to date. Once you have that installed, you're good to go with your emulator.
Second, you're going to need a source of ROMS. I use http://www.emuparadise.org since it has every Nintendo 64 ROM. Please note that this site does have some popups to pay for the large amount of bandwidth the ROMS require. None of them give spyware to my knowledge.
Now I'm going to assume you've downloaded and installed project 64. I'm also going to assume you've downloaded a ROM that you would like to play. Make a folder in your documents, or your desktop, somewhere where you'll remember. Name it ROMS, Games, N64 st00f, whatever. All of your downloaded ROMS should go into that folder.
Open Project64. You are here.
Click the option: Choose ROM Directory.
Pick the folder that has your ROMs in it.
Your project 64 should look like this, it should display every ROM you have.
Double click the game you want to play, and in a few seconds it will load up. Here it is. :]
High Res texture pack, quite nice.
Cell Shaded texture pack, my preference.
Do you want your game to look like this? Well there are several texture packs availible which retexture popular nintendo games, Zelda OOT being the most heavily retextured. Visit http://emutalk.net/forumdisplay.php?f=110 for more information. This requires the download of several plugins for Project64, and most importantly, the texture pack, most of them weighing in at over 150mb.
END OF N64 EMULATOR GUIDE.
I've decided to add a guide to installing a texture pack, since I've been getting questions about it. THIS IS COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, AND IS ONLY NEEDED IF YOU WANT A BETTER LOOKING GAME. We will be using the windwaker graphics texture pack as an example. Well, here you go:
To install a texture pack, you're only going to need to know where your project 64 directory is.
You're going to need Rice's Video plugin, which you can download here: https://ricevideo.bountysource.com/downloads Download the setup exe, not the debug file. In project64\plugin directory, your files should be there. Also make a folder called hires_textures in your project64/plugin directory.
After rice's video plugin is installed, fire up project 64, go to options > settings, and change your video plugin to rice's. Do not select the debug plugin if it's there.
Now fire up project 64. Go top options > configure graphics plugin. Uncheck the box that says "hide advanced settings"
Now while you're in options > configure graphics plugin, go to the texture filters tab. Check the box that says "Load hi-res textures if availible"
After that's done, download BMGlib.dll, which can be done through a quick google search. Throw it into your project 64 directory.
Finally, now download the texture pack itself: http://www.divshare.com/download/2539358-e78 is the link to the windwaker graphics texture pack, I can't find the high res one that I have, so you'll have to do a bit of googling to find it yourself. Make a folder in your hires_texture folder in your project64/plugin directory. Inside that folder, make a folder called THE LEGEND OF ZELDA. It has to be exactly like that. Why you ask?
Because it says it on top of the window. This applies to any game you're trying to attach a texture pack to.
Once you have your "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA" folder, extract the downloaded contents of the texture pack into that folder.
Once all that is done, fire up zelda ocarina of time, and you'll have a nice beautiful game to play :]
END OF TEXTURE INSTALLATION GUIDE.
If you have a wired USB xbox 360 controller, then you're in luck! You can download xbox 360 controller software from microsoft.com, and use your xbox 360 controller with project 64.
Well, this concludes my guide, let me know if you think additions are needed. Happy gaming!
