    Choosing between 2 university programs...

I need your opinions guys. I've been accepted to my top 2 programs at university, but I've got no idea which one to take.

The first one is Game Development and Entrepreneurship:
    https://connect.uoit.ca/uoit/program.do?from=subject&programID=180

The university is far from my house (about a 2 hour commute one way, residence is not an option), but it's also a good university; it's considered to be the Canadian MIT, and is the highest funded tech university in Canada. I've also got a scholarship there. The only thing is that I don't know what kind of good jobs I'll be able to get if I go through with this program, it seems very one-ended, as in I'll probably only get jobs in either the business side of a gaming company or the programming side...I don't really see myself making games for my entire life.

EDIT: A few people say the campus life at UOIT is shit: http://www.univforum.com/canadian-universities/viewtopic.php?t=7143

The second program is something I'd really like to do, it's Digital Media:
    http://www.cse.yorku.ca/csprosp_students/undergrad/DM/index.html

This university is still far from my place, and once again, residence is not an option. It's a 1.5 hour commute, not as bad, but there are a bunch of disadvantages. My sister goes there and says the place sucks; the atmosphere is dull and people don't really...Interact. The professors seem to not care about you and to be honest it's not prestigious in any way, it's really just an average school for average people. There's a saying that's been going around about it, "If you can pick up a fork, you can go to York.". What I'm sad about is that the program sounds really amazing, I'd be learning how to make games AND so much more! But the university itself seems like a piece of shit. No scholarship here, I don't think.

Which one do you guys think I should take? It's really hard to figure this out myself considering that it's going to determine the rest of my life...Thanks in advance to those who reply :p

I would pick the first university. Even if you don't want to spend the rest of your life making video games out of the two colleges it sounds like the better choice.

just having that degree doesnt mean you'll be stuck with that job, having a degree in general opens alot of doors, people will be alot more keener if you have entrepreneurial skills to employ you if you didnt have any at all.

I'd pick the first one, a better education and a huge market, and a much better experience overall.

I don't really know anyone in that program (or that faculty), but I do know a few people in engineering and commerce at UOIT and they hate it. The campus is apparently really crappy and recruitment is almost nonexistent (again, this isn't for your faculty, so take this with a grain of salt).

I agree; it's a commuter school so the atmosphere is kind of dull. But that isn't to say you won't have fun there as it's an extremely large campus (by Canadian standards at least) with tons of things to do. I know you said residence is not an option, but if you can give it a shot, even if it's only for first year. You'll have a lot more fun, it'll make for a much easier transition and you won't waste 3+ hours of your day travelling. The extra $4000-5000 you spend won't make much of a difference in the long run, but the experiences, friends and memories you make definitely will. You also seem to like that program, and if the only thing preventing you from it is the campus life, then you should definitely consider it as I'd argue UOIT is even worse.

I'd suggest visiting both campuses and talking to current students in your program. The one factor that really helped me decide was the environment; how well I "fit" in. I don't know about UOIT, but I do know that York is having an open house sort of thing this Saturday, definitely check it out.

PM me if you need anything else!

I'm in Quebec this weekend so I can't go, but there'll hopefully me more in the future. I can't go to res either because of the cost, I just don't have the money for it.

    I heard UOIT was terrible.

Go with whatever you enjoy. I live in Ontario as well, although I'm planning to go to business school.

Schools don't make you successful. It's how you network after school that makes you successful.

    I agree with this.

I would personally choose the first, but you need to think about it, I mean it's college, another 4 years of your life will be spent there, if the college life is completely dead/boring and after the first week you're going to wish you chose the other college.

Idk man, 4 years is quite a long time. Good luck choosing though.

i thought it was something prestigious for a second... BOTH MICKY MOUSE DEGREES.

Go with the most valuable with transferable skills "DIGITAL MEDIA" most people don't even go into the field they done their degree in for instance both my uncle has a Law degree but hes a helicopter pilot.

consider computer science also. game development can be a difficult major, the skills required get very advanced.
i'd say take the game dev degree over the other one any day, programming is theee shit

Go to the one with the scholarship if you really can not make up your mind. The prestige of the university does not matter. You can always transfer later so the choice should not get you too stressed.

From reading your OP I get the impression that you already have subconciously picked the first one. It seems like you would be more motivated because it sounds like you already like it better. A 30 minute longer commute shouldn't keep you from doing what you want.

When I was in college I though my 45 minute commute sucked ass. Now I feel like a bitch.2 fuckin hours.... Jesus Christ.
