Anybody have any family/relatives/personal experience with their interview process? What questions to expect, etc?

congrats. (isnt it a fairly late in the interview period for finance to be hiring though?)

don't have personal experience with SS, but i found glassdoor pretty useful for interview prep wrt all things financial. what's the position at SS?

I'm not too sure in regards to the interview period - It probably has something to do with it being a student internship over like a real job position. Paid if I'm not mistaken though...The position is Financial Operations Specialist. I assume I'll just do bitch work but I'll take it haha

I'm also looking for something to do during the summer Super - any suggestions there?

I'll go look through glassdoor rn

Took a look, don't see my exact job position on their list. Interesting

You should try to avoid operations if at all possible if your goal is to continue working in the front office. It's not relevant experience, and there are way too many people in finance that will look down on you in future interviews if you have back office experience on your resume. I wish that wasn't true, but it is.

With that being said, if you have a genuine interest in operations, go for it. It can be a great career choice so long as you are truly interested in it. Otherwise, it's like digging yourself in a deep ditch.

Also, operations isn't a bad idea for freshmen/sophomores, but juniors should not be focusing on it.

EDIT: If you still need a summer gig, and you feel you have a good relationship with the guy you PM'd me about before, you should reach out to him. He very well might let you stay longer, or he might know people that are hiring. Good luck!

EDIT2: Top prop trading firms are typically still recruiting around this time of year. If that's something you are interested in, you should check it out (DRW, SIG, Belvedere, Spot, etc.). Most are in Chicago. I know some of the major hedge funds are still hiring for undergrad positions, but I believe most positions have been filled (AQR for example).

Damn, I had no idea. I'll take a look at some of the firms you mentioned. My issue there is my GPA isn't a fucking 4.0 haha

Would either of you two be okay with checking out my resume/cover letter?

    Interview with State Street

I've got an interview on Monday with a consulting group out of Omaha so this thread will maybe help me out as well!

What year are you in undergrad? I recently switched from med school aspirations to a finance/banking degree that I might later venture to see if medicine goes back to its old state of secureness.

    Good luck!

    Interview with State Street

sure. happy to help with resume/CL reviews. shoot me a pm! i don't have direct experience with many financial firms because i didn't interview at many, but i did write 80 cover letters last year (errr... i guess two "years" ago now? :p), so i have that going for me. essentially defer to what nikeshoes says in all things related to finance. also i totally forgot you're still internship hunting, not looking for full time jobs... speaking of which, is MS not on the table for next summer? or just looking to try something else?

what kind of consulting? the only consulting firms i interviewed with in that part of the country were like oil/gas/automotive/chemical/materials consulting (which i personally think must be dull af)

Yeah I feel like I made the right switch too, much more opportunities to grow professionally. Lot higher ceiling.

It's a gig where I'd be asked to get customers to switch over from the local well known internet provider to a fortune 500 company that wants to take over the region. This is an entry level job so not too complicated.

I'm waiting on some calls back from some connections I've got that work for big firms/financial institutions in greater Omaha.

Nothing SS specific but have you considered going to mock interviews on your campus? I realize it's a little too late now. Maybe one of your brothers has worked there? Isn't that what fraternities are for :)

Interviews, in my opinion, are all the same. They all just want to see what you're capable of, and if there is any substance to you outside of your job. Nobody wants a dickhead who is just going to come in and be arrogant all day.

I realize I'm really off topic by now, but just be yourself and don't overthink what they are going to ask too much. When they ask you questions about the company or why they should choose you, don't focus on your flaws, don't even mention them. Don't use words like "I believe," use words like "I will." Also, for a question like that be sure to answer with a situation or way you can help the company itself. They don't give a shit about how you can prosper, they want to see the company itself prosper and potentially hire you after your internship is over.

I hope this helped or something

None of my brothers have worked at SS, but a few do work at JPM, Merryl Lynch, Oracle, and MS and they all gave me generic info but yeah. Connections are fucking everything in our business world - it's incredible how it works. Noted the suggestion on "I believe" vs "I will" thanks a lot man

Any conversation about the topic helps I promise haha

trust me, you don't want that job. that sounds horrible... are you paid on commission too? sounds like AXA or something to me lol

there are some good interviewing guides around once you get to that stage in the process. i think vault has a good one (i know they have the best one for case interviews... and that i purposefully neglected it). honestly just reading some reddit threads about what not to do in interviews isn't a bad approach. the tl;dr is "dress well, speak well, have relevant experience that you can talk about, ask questions, know what the firm does, make eye contact, stay calm, and don't make yourself stand out in a bad way/don't be 'that' guy"

Totally agree, I let them know I wasn't too interested after I researched them further. You'd get commission yes and potential growth there.

AXA fucking spams me with resume requests: http://puu.sh/mnC9F.png. they also cold-called me one day after i just started my current job and asked if i could fly into NY for final round interviews for a position i didn't even submit a cover letter for. so i assume this is something similar. don't waste your time

Interview went really well - sold me another internship towards that end that would have be part time, full time in the summer, and then entry level position or higher upon graduation. They did the basic behavioral bullshit and then towards the end she did some random 180 and started asking me technical questions.

I'm not sure what AXA is entirely (have a good basis) but seems kinda of similar in a way. Mine was more local and a business that has good profits for Omaha and would be good but not for what I'm looking to do in life. Need experience at this point.

Nice man. I had a web dev internship today, mostly just bullshitted the entire interview - in a good way. Business is so much more uptight, I hated it when I was in accounting.
