It's a disease called sleepapneoa, where when you breathe in while sleeping (snoring), if you breathe in too hard, it stops your breathing and can cause you to choke. If you are diagnosed, you have a have a breathing tank, which generates oxygen from condensed water.

I only know this is my dad suffers from it.

Yeah this, My grandma suffers from it aswell.
She may not snore anymore, But now that breathing tank is keeping my grandfather up, Haha.

Though I don't think those cloth things work, As you simply stop breathing. Mouth open or closed.
