Is building computers then selling profitable? I came up with this build which is top of the line IMO and it came to about $900on newegg so if I sold it on craigs list how much do you think I could get? I would love to do this to make some extra $.

Now I kind of just put a bunch of stuff together, some of this im sure I would replace with something else. Here it is:

Sony NEC Optiarc 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model AD-7190A - OEM
$27

RAIDMAX AZTEC ATX-619WYP Black/ Yellow SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply - Retail
$105

Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAJS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
$100

ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
$130

EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
2 of them for $190

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Retail
$47

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX6400CZWOF - Retail
$160

TR2TT TR2-M12 80mm Ball CPU Cooler - Retail
$24

Microsoft Windows Vista 32-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD - OEM
$110

Total:$892

Now I know I can get a cheaper case but this one really stands out and might catch someones attention better, I could still easily get a nice looking one for 40 bucks cheaper too. As for the two graphics cards, well the motherboard supports it so why not. The CPU is top of the line but I could still go cheaper, I don't know if I needed the CPU fan but I added it anyway, not sure if the case comes with enough fans as well. I would love a PC that had the above specs and I have the extra money to do it but problem is it will eat all my extra money and im not fond of spending all of it on a computer, so if I could turn this into a profitable buisness I would eventually be able to keep one of the builds for myself. I mean wow this thing could run any game and most of them all on high if not all.

So questions I have are:
-Is building computers and selling them profitable?
-Is this build decent?
-If yes to the above two then what do you think I could sell it for?

And considering I am just learning about the more detail stuff about computers then please go easy on me if the build sucks or doesn't make sense =(

Update: saw someone with a similar build on craigs list but his two video cards were worse and it was going for $1200. Maybe a rip off but if its not then im thinking I could get a bit more?

Yeah I suppose, is building a computer pretty easy though? I mean will I need to buy chords or anything to connect all the hardware or will it come with it? I have everything I would need hardware wise listed though right?

I don't see why I shouldn't make some profit, that computer is better then ones that sell for way more. Im sure a lot of people are aware of building their own but I could probly find some people who havn't a clue how or are just too lazy. I would find it fun to build it, even if I can only make $100 off it.

You got everything and i would think the power cord and DVI or vga cable would come with it.

I really dont think youll find any customers though the people who want a good computer will normally build it themselves and for the people that are lazy will just go to best buy. You have a good idea but i really dont think its gona work

I really don't want to be out $900 though heh, I have only 7 days to return some of the stuff for the computer if I can't sell. Ive read online and its something quite a few people do, they build them for just fun and turn around and sell them for a little more profit. From the looks of craigs list in my city, I won't have much competition, most people selling just average computers or junkers. Its impossible to tell whether or not I will get a customer, not everyone knows about building their own, and best buy does not sell good gaming computers, you would have to do upgrading to it.

I just hope I can build the thing heh...its pretty easy right?

you could start a whole new range of customised Pc's.

Where do you live, I might be interested.

I live in Arizona. My budget only allows me to afford one computer within $900. Although if I can sell that and do it again a few times I would be able to afford two and double my profits.

You will end up making some profit. Not the most but yer.

Well considering I have nothing major to do for awhile now and the thought of putting together computers would be entertaining to me for some reason, I wouldn't care if I didn't make much of a profit, getting extra money for doing something I would like, lol sounds good to me.

Ok I figured out that for 100 bucks more I could switch to a intel quad core 2.4ghz and still have sli 8600gt. Now since I am selling it im sure someone would find a quad core more appealing but is it really a good idea to upgrade to that for $100 more? I mean is it really necesary?

OR

I stick with the original build

OR

I stick with the original build and get one 8800gts video card instead of sli 8600gt, not sure if one 8800 is worth it though unless you can afford to SLI. The one 8800 will probly run me 100 bucks more then original build.

Need help! what one would you find most appealing when buying a computer?

Well if you plan on selling this on ebay... usually people that have no clue about computers would go for the one that has the best graphics card, because thats basically all a gamer wants is the graphics card.... But other then that i would go with the intel quad core 2.4 Ghz for the extra 100 bucks...
Anyways good luck on selling computers online :)

Well I won't use ebay because there are way too many computers for sell there.. craigs list would be my best bet. Im just not sure how sli 8600 would compare vs one 8800gts

anyone think it would be a better idea to just post on craigs list saying building custom pc and only charge a labor fee? I would think I could have a larger chance at getting a customer. A labor fee may easily be $100-$200 maybe

Yeah shipping to australia would probly be very pricy, by the time itd get there itd probly be broken.

anyway I guess i will try and get a customer and build what they want. Not yet sure on how I can avoid them backing out at last second and me losing money.
