This thread is complete and udder ignorance i dont even want to grace it with my rant It is too fare below me, so i will just say this, i agree 100% with what this guy said here, good man.

 

The main difference between death and black metal (in general) is the technicality. Black Metal is usually not as technical as Death Metal, they rely more on constants riffs with high pitched screams/grunts (at least that's the classic black metal). Then we have Black Metal bands like Dimmu Borgir (melodic black metal) which relies much on keyboards and a little more technical playing. Listen to Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the great apocalypse for an example (my favorite Dimmu Borgir song),
On the Death Metal part, it can be categorized into many sub-genres. For example Thrash/Death Metal is bands like Possessed or Death, Brutal Death Metal is Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Six Feet Under (not sure about that one).
You have Swedish Death Metal which in my ears isn't really death metal. They are bands such as In Flames and Entombed.
Remember, it can all be categorized more fine. Most bands sound very different in Metal, that's why i love it
