AMC's Hell on Wheels is a fantastically gritty series (on Netflix). Much more depth than it looks on the surface, it's got the right balance of cunning wit and intelligence to make it a great show.
Right now only the first season has been released, but Breaking The Faith is an excellent TV show.
Prison break, especially the first 2 seasons

Sherlock
The 4400 (on netflix)
House of Cards (on netflix, new season coming out soon)
Avatar the last airbender (cartoon, but it's absolutely riveting)
And full metal alchemist while we're on the subject. You really should give it a try, even if you're not into that sort of stuff. I wasn't but I still deeply enjoyed it
Criminal Minds
NCIS
Helix
But on top of anything, if it's the very last show you're ever going to watch... Watch Sherlock.

Entourage, Dexter, Mad Men, Homeland , House of Lies
I have a few suggestions, some have already been said and some not.
Revolution is a decent series, its based on life after an apocalyptic event where all of the power goes out and society breaks down into a pre-electricity era.
Plenty of swordplay, guns, hot babes & a hint of sci-fi, although i lost interest after the first few series - things got a little silly.
True Blood - Basically twilight for adults - my girlfriend is crazy for this, hot hunks, sex and lots of blood and magical shit.
Falling Skies - Produced by Spielberg, awesome series following a group of resistance fighters in the aftermath of an alien invasion.
and my all time favouraite...
Battlestar Galactica Amazing Sci-fi with some great SFX, epic space combat, tons of episodes that'll keep you occupied for weeks, great cast, and a really good storyline.
Quite a mature themed show, with politics & other moral issues involved too. (Note this is the modern, re-imagined series.)

I thought season 3 was terrible, otherwise awesome show no doubt.
Dexter, Supernatural, House of Cards, Supernatural, House MD, Prison Break, The League, The Mentalist, Grimm, Parks and Rec, Community, The Office, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
