How can I make my avatar a .PNG?

So I want my avatar to have no background, but when I try to use a .PNG it doesn't let me. I'm pretty sure I've seen other people with .PNG avatar pictures. If someone could help me out that would be awesome! - Thanks

If you have Photoshop or GIMP what you need to do is make sure your avatar has a transparent background (it will look like a gray and white checker pattern behind it). Once that's done make sure your avatar is exactly 80x80 pixels and save it with a .png file extension. It should work after that.
