Bash (Born-Again Shell) coming to Windows 10

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Bash, this is a huge win for developers. Just like with command prompt, batch, and DOS on Windows, Linux (and Mac) use Bash. It's just been announced that Windows 10 will receive an update that will add a Linux subsystem to the Windows kernel, allowing *nix code to be executed natively without a VM. Because the subsystem will essentially be Ubuntu constructed over the Windows kernel, we'll be getting nice Linux toys like gcc and the apt-get package manager :)

This is all in a recent push by Microsoft to be more developer-friendly while competing with the ever-changing market that Apple seems to have a decent grip on as-of-late. I'm super pumped for this.

EDIT: The live demo showcases a few of the new toys we'll have access to: http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/30/11331014/microsoft-windows-linux-ubuntu-bash

My only concern is, I hope this doesn't kill the Windows API / .NET that we've both spent so long mastering

Unlikely, since the subsystem is still using the Windows kernel. Unix is not *technically* present at all. Think of it as just being greater compatibility.
EDIT: Also .NET is a framework that compiles down to bytecode, so that'll be around forever regardless. If anything they'll just make it more cross-platform.
