I'm from Massachusetts, not NY, we just go to New York every holiday season to visit our friends. It's more likely to be a Russian thing, then :p And Reform Judaism is a branch of Judaism, like Orthodox and whatnot. It's been around for a while.

Well, actually, I do know 2 other Jewish families that place a "Christmas" tree up for New Years, if Hannukah is either well before or well after (as you should probably know, Judaism its own sacred calender) Christmas day.

it's tradition, it's just like thanksgiving, not religious at all but it's when you things to other people, It reminds you to be nicer in the bitter cold....

For me, it's more of a time for family, getting together, giving each other cool stuff. It's not religious at all and I don't think about God or Jesus. But I like it just fine.

EDIT: It's not greedy to like free stuff as long as you sice it to other peeps too. ^^,

    And Inventor, Okay lol :p

I celebrate it because its not just "getting free stuff" its also about giving. I think its a time where you can show your appreciation to like your parents and stuff by buying them presents. Ofcourse when your a kid you don't really buy them presents or anything.

Also its a reason to bring families together, if there was no christmas there'd be some other day in its place where the same thing could happen. Or new years would probably become the new christmas.

I don't really celebrate easter because i don't eat chocolate.

It's all about the presents. And the turkey. Mmm... Mashed potatoes.

If you're an atheist then you shouldn't find Christmas a happy time of the year

Why not? Isn't spending time with your family and getting each other presents a happy thing?

    I think so...

He wasn't saying his opinion he was making a general statement which is wrong, because even if only one atheist enjoyed Christmas, his statement wouldn't make any sense.

Christmas was originally a Pagan tradition. I don't think you know enough about it's origins to pass your opinion about Atheists on this matter buddy.

I can enjoy religious things if I choose to, as they do not make me feel uncomfortable or unhappy by doing so. Some things, yes, but others such as festivals are fine. I don't really celebrate the Eostre festival, but it is nice to have some rich >90% dark chocolate every now and then.

Shedderbeam has a point. There are 7 other known people who have the same biography from that area.

Christmas is Christmas. It's just celebrated now. Easter is void for my family.

Well, I don't label myself an atheist, nor a Christian, I'm somewhat lost in between. For me, because my family is religious, Christmas and Easter have become more of a tradition than a religious celebration. I don't know, something about the atmosphere, the people, the cold weather, etc that feels right. :)
