Asking for a PM prior to trading

Is there anyway we can somehow send a message to every user when they log onto Sythe and give them some tips to trading, such as asking for a PM? Yeah it may seem excessive to the regulars who come here for the community, but there's always a option where you can choose not to receive PMs from admins/members/etc.

I'm tired of logging on and seeing people posting on my vouch threads and such saying I scammed them, when clearly it was an impostor. I've been around long enough to know that it's "the trader's fault for not asking" but something this simple can prevent nearly half the scams on the site.

I'd like some discussion on this before a lock. Thanks.

was intended to be PM'd to every user, or every new user at least, in some way. But I don't think anything's been done yet

 

That thread is in a section that most people wouldn't even bother going into. It's true that most people visit Sythe for its market and could care less about the community aspect.

What if we stuck it where when you log in it shows you the different markets. Have it say "Always request a private message when trading"

 

That wouldn't work. There are stickies in every section and there are still retards who fail to read them. It would need to pop up and slap them before it get read.

 

Pop-ups wouldn't work as 90% would have blockers anyways. Until they actually take time to read things it's their own fault, there's not a lot we can do. I get probably 3-4 people a week posting on my vouches saying my Skype has scammed them, yet it turns out to be a different Skype everytime.

 

If mini-ranks weren't worthless now with all the fun ones that exist, a temporary mini-rank could be an incentive for reading them (quiz or something at end?)

 

I agree with IDB.

It's like when you buy a new game console or something. If you try to install it without reading the instruction manual first and do something wrong that fucks it up, then it's ultimately your own fault for not taking the time to read through the manual first.

In my opinion, there's nothing further that can be done about this...

 

Well I agree with a Vast PM if that is possible then. Because we still need a way to just make sure it hits everyone's inbox once it has done that then we have done everything we can do and it is on them after that.

 

Just get a vBulletin add-on which forces users to read and accept specific threads/forum rules. Simple.

Also if say for example someone kept spamming, there is a button where you can force a certain user to read the rules so when they login it will say: 'The administrator wants you to read and accept the forum rules before continuing'.

Best vBulletin plugin for that sort of stuff.

 

I'm with HHN on this one, when the person came to me saying HHN scammed him, he was obviously talking to someone fake expecting me to repay what was lost. I don't know if it's ignorance or what.

 

Just PM everyone that the rule has been changed and you now need to get a PM for a report to be valid, it should od been automatically done, since it's a new rule and not everyone reads them.

 

I agree with this idea, or alternatively a notification to new members when they start directing them to a thread with all the information in.

 

Nice idea even tho i am new too it would help somebody who dosn't know.

 

This was recently brought up and an admin noticed two major issues with the idea:

1. Sythe.Org already has that popup message for new visitors
2. It'd take up a lot of space in the DB

My input is that I think it is unnecessary what with the guides we already have in place to serve the same exact purpose. A long, tl;dr PM isn't going to help anyone. On that note, I'll close and deny this, as the points brought up in this thread have not merited the approval of the suggestion.
