there is no perk to using mage only at high combat levels. With a build like that you would be able to get a high range level without it changing your combat level, would be silly to not use it. Mage vs melee kind of worked pre-eoc because you could use polypore with venge which is pretty funny. If you want a mage only account you could make a sotd pure, if you wanna stick with the "tank" part I would just make a range tank.

Of course it's a thing, It's just that normal people call them a main. If you get range or mage levels you can get the same amount of attack / strength levels without raising combat. but defense will raise it regardless.

 

that is false. the formula is you can obtain 1.5x the amount of range levels in both attack and strength combined. at 99 range or mage (as for combat level purposes they are the same skill, much like atk+str), you can have a total of 148 combined atk/str without becoming melee based.

in the same way, you can add atk/str and divide by 1.5 to determine the highest magic/range level without becoming mage/range based.

my question was simply, as range tanks exist, could a mage tank do well
