Take a look at the Lenovo Y series my man. I had a y510p for about a year and a half before I build myself a PC and I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Currently the newest model would be the y50. I've found that for the price, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to beat the hardware and build quality in those laptops.

I've had good experiences with Lenovo laptops as well, not the Y series but I'm sure they're worth it

Can't vouch for Lenovo, but I can personally say I've had great experiences with Asus, my first asus system is 7 years old and still performs like a champ considering its age.

All I've had to do to it is add some RAM, replace the HDD and reapply thermal paste to the CPU.

Lenovo Y Series is the best for your price range. I use Lenovo Y50 for University, it's light, compact, and runs smoothly. The keyboards on Lenovo are also a highlight, they're extremely satisfying to type on.

The only other recommendation I can make is ASUS. I've got an ASUS ROG laptop, which I use exclusively for gaming (CSGO). I don't take it to Uni though because it's a tad bit heavy. But I never have any issues with ASUS, ever.

Lol that's actually a lot of maintenance. I had a shitty $450 Toshiba that's around the same age and still going strong, haven't had to do any mods to it. It could use a RAM upgrade but it's still got 4GB which is manageable.

Also like someone else said, the Lenovo Y series. My Y40-80 is terrific. I'd strongly suggest doing a clean install of Windows right when you get it though. The power manager bloatware fucked my battery meter and I had to send it to the warehouse to get fixed. Their software is nothing but trouble. Stay away from it.
