I'm going to be getting into it this spring. Going to get my M1 this week and when the courses start up I'm going to sign up.

I'm thinking about getting a street triple (675cc) for my first bike. Do you think it absolutely necessary to start off with a 250cc?

Do you have any riding experience? I started out in the dirt. A good friend of mine got into riding recently and got a rebel 250, he has found he has already outgrown it and needs a larger bike. 60-65 downhill with the wind at your back isnt too good for highway riding.

Id probably start in the 400-650 range. Thatll go the speed limit and then some, without being a monster 1200+. Only reason my first "street" bike was a 225 was because it made for a sweet trail bike and happened to he street legal lol. It could go 75 easy on the highway too.

Edit: Checked out the street triple. Thats a pretty fast bike, I personally wouldnt go that route. When Im talking 400-650 route I was thinking cruiser types, a crotch rocket with 600+ cc's is a FAST bike.

Here are my thoughts on the matter. I'm going to take a 2 day course that gets you your full license. 2 full days of riding on 125cc bikes.

My friend also has a 250cc which I could mess around with after the course until I'm good to go.

But even he told me that if he had to do it again he would have just went straight for a 600. My dad who is also into bikes told me that the speed of the big isn't that big of a deal and that safety is more or less up to the driver.

The street triple is more torquey. So unlike the sports bikes that have a sensitive throttle, the throttle on these can be pulled back further (so I would have more control).

The other option I had in mind was a yamaha 350. But I really wouldn't want to lose money on selling it the following year to get a faster bike.

Got a good deal on a Ninja250 as a learner/starter bike in the fall. Cleaned it up a bit to get it running and learned to ride.

Will be selling it come Spring and think I'll be picking up an old cruiser (maybe a Maxim or a Nighthawk)

    Edit:

The speed isn't that big of a deal (in a highway sense, a 250 will still do 80 mph w/o a problem), but the torque and overall forgiveness of the bike does. I started on a 250 and I'm moving up to a 600(ish) after learning on it. Small bikes are much more forgiving and if you let off the clutch/give too much throttle/whatever, you'll go down much easier on a bigger bike. That and they're just heavier bikes. If a friend has a smaller bike you can practice on, I'd just do that and then buy yourself a bigger bike. If you cannot readily use a smaller bike to learn, I wouldn't just go out and buy a 600.

Also, take in account the riding you'll be doing. Ex: Often back roads, city riding, or major highways.

Yeah if you have a good head on your shoulders and arent a speed demon you should be OK.

Im pretty sure a 350 would be a good sized starter though, what was the bike? I didnt know yamaha made a 350. Also will this be your primary transportation or just for fun
