    Anybody out there invest?

If so in what? CD's, mutual funds, bonds, stocks? If so what stocks do you have in your portfolio?

I'm looking to move a lot of my money out of a mutual fund (LMALX) into my own portfolio.

Also, feel free to discuss current, past, or future econmic situations.

    The stock market.

I'm a big fan of the Fast Money crew and Jim Cramer, I sometimes bounce stocks around based on their advise.

My big 5 that I've had for a long time are Merck, Google, Ford, Sandisk, and Apple. I have a dozen others, but not over 20 shares.

Apple, Google, and Merck have all been great. Sandisk has had its ups and downs, and Ford... I don't talk about. ;)

Don't make your decision based off this though (by any means...)

The world, especially the US, is about to go into a deep recession. We've had a long and large world boom. Now the creditors are putting on the breaks and we will likely go into a long and deep world recession. Investing in stocks is about the last thing you want to be doing right now. Especially if you live in the US.

Even if they have strong foreign roots (like Apple)? My guiding forces (above) are saying slow down on buying, but not sell or avoid investment...

If you are desperate to invest look for purely European companies. But be warned there is a high probability you will lose money due to the economic conditions at this time and in the coming years.

The explosion of cheap credit over the last decade has caused massive asset inflation. As the asset market begins to correct (as it has begun to in the US housing market) both individuals and companies who have borrowed money to purchase assets are going to be forced to either front up with more collateral for their loans or foreclose.

An increased number of foreclosures will put more cheap assets onto the market which will drive the price of assets down further in a self perpetuating plummet.

This is particularly bad because of the popularity of asset packages over the last decade. Many many companies have invested in what they considered to be 'medium risk' asset packages. These packages will now begin to lose their free market value. The first large and disturbing example of this has been homeloan packages which include subprime loans.

More is to come. This is only the tip of the ice berg.

Mmm... very interesting thought. I'd imagine Bernanke can do something to guard against it. If this happens, then won't the dollar fall more too? Maybe I should just turn all my money in for gold... :p

Why do you think the gold price is spiking?

Yes the US dollar is heading for collapse.

Yeah, the CAD (which less than 6 months ago was significantly lower than the USD) is now roughly equal to it (~0.1 cent difference, I think).

No, but it doesn't vastly decline either. The world economy has been linked over and over again to the US economy, so gold would then sound like the best bet. I'm gonna stick with my stocks though (mostly because I'm crazy). That's part of the US Econ though, fall and rise again.

Gold is a good anti inflation stock, you won't get rich from it. And as far as my portfolio (as small as it may be), I've invested in some foriegn mutual funds. As far as US I've got a few solar stocks that have done very well and are expected to keep doing strong, hence not following the US market.

Basically, right now, I'm looking at anything that's green energy related. Supposedly, it should weather a recession well. Things like nuclear and wind energy. Natural gas is another one that should jump in the next few years.

Really it depends if you are willing to take risks. If you are then go the stock market path. If not then stick to something safer (many options).

If i were you i'd invest in land/houses.

The housing market is in the shitter right now, and not looking to rise any time soon.

The world and all its contents are the ONLY things of worth. Thanks for your help regarding this thread...

i have invested 100$ in stocks in google..back like a year ago..

within a couple of years or so they are planning to release a cellphone where it is FREE, all you have to do is put up with ads.

thats why i invested in it :)

and yeah..dont invest in housing..because the housing costs are going down because many people cant afford to take out loans.

100 bucks? What'd you do, buy like a 4th of a share? Considering it's nearly $700 a share now and like $400 a share last year.

Oh, and to anyone who thought the market was rebounding you probably got bit. Hollidays are over and the market is continuing to fall. Down 300 points on the day...

Dont invest in US currency. I read in the news that Inda (The Taj Mahul mainly) isnt accepting US dollars as payment anymore.
