Which type of animation do you prefer and why. This also extends to Manga vs Comic books if you'd like.

I prefer cartoons. Disney movies to be specific. I always felt anime was too literal, it bugged me how characters often repeats to you EXACTLY what just happened. For example: character x turns into a bug, character y says "auhhhh *shimmering eye closeup*... He's... A bug??? *zoom out canted shot dark background spot light black and white dramatic bass sequence*". Disney movies have always captured my attention and imagination and makes me think about underlying meaning. The dialog and "acting" and cinematography are MUCH smoother in my mind as I watch it, it feels more comfortable and natural. Not so forced as I explained about anime.

Alternatively, some of my absolute favorite tv shows and movies have been anime, FMA FMAB spirited away etc, but there's no middle ground. There are no animes I mildly enjoy. So, simply, there are many more cartoons I enjoy than anime shows/movies

Back to my example and reasons for disliking anime, I know it's a culture thing, and they absolutely flow so much smoother if watched in Japanese, but I cbf learning Japanese to properly enjoy all forms of anime. Still though, whether character y says "auhhhhh!!! He's.... A bug!!!" Or "ああ!彼はバグです!!!!" I'd still find it annoying

I can't stand anime myself. I know quite a few people that are obsessed with it and could never understand why. I know it's a big thing in Asia but still.. I don't even think i could date someone that was into anime.

As for me i enjoy Disney movie's but nothing really after 2003, maybe a few movies but that's it. Same with things like cartoon network shows anything after 2003 i won't watch. But if you think about it you can't really compare Disney to anything. Disney makes by FAR some of the best movies that are created.

Opinns, I think you summed this up really well. To me, I personally feel that Disney is incomparable to cartoons in general because Disney.. is Disney, they're just that good normally from the movies that I have seen.

On the other hand I voted Anime, because I prefer anime against the usual cartoons (though there are some goody cartoons ive seen).

@Mohtasa I agree that some anime dubs/even originals do feel a bit forced onto the audience, but I suppose that just could be how the culture of it is, I don't know personally. I prefer anime because I like the variety in stories, while the cartoons I've heard of (mainstream cartoons, I guess you might say) are mostly comedy-dramas. Nice idea for a thread, Moh :)

Don't think you can compare the two, not in a broad sense. Movies/TV shows are extremely different, in relation to anime and cartoons; which makes it hard to compare the two genre type.

Anime is generally aimed at an older audience, and has a more holistic genre than cartoons. Yea, there are older age aimed cartoons such as South Park, Adult Swim, etc.

But to answer your question, which do I prefer? None. I enjoy them both. Cartoons such as Dexters Labaratory, Johnny Bravo, etc I have watched over and over, and will never get bored of them, loved the old cartoon network. In terms of Anime... I loved Bleach/DBZ/Pokemon etc.

Not sure if you know, but DBZ/Pokemon are considered Anime, not cartoons.

TV show wise, Anime far outdoes Cartoons. Movie wise, Cartoons thus far. The only reason Cartoon movies are able to produce better end results is due to the CGI and improvement of graphics within that genre. If cartoons were to remain the same as they were a decade ago, they wouldn't be as popular as they are now, due to the improvements in technology.

I prefer manga over anime, that being said I prefer cartoons over anime. You pretty much summed it up in your first post. It feels too fake and cheesy sometimes.

I'm not talking about content or genre, I'm talking about the "art form" used in anime and cartoons. This includes how it's drawn, the acting/voice acting, and how it's animated

One thing that always bugged me as well (forgot to mention) is how girly the men are. I personally don't care about sexuality, people like what they like. However, a lot of anime characters are, for lack of a better term, faggots. It makes me uncomfortable and embarrassed to be seen watching it.

I think animes are better.
I don't know why, I just prefer them over cartoons.

That's not due to anime, it's due to how 'attractive'/'handsome' men are perceived in countries such as Japan and Korea, where most famous and well known Anime comes from.

Do you enjoy DBZ/Pokemon moht?

I like Budokai and all of the older pokemon games, but I can't watch the shows anymore. I can probably watch pokemon for nostalgia, but dragon ball z is like... the perfect example of all the annoying things I listed. Specifically in that show, I can't stand when they sit there during stressful parts and make growling/grunting noises while they shake a bit and gnash their teeth... over acted to shittttt

Oh wow :'(

DBZ is prob my favourite show of all time (animated). I agree where they spend sooo much extra time on powering up and what not, but that's mainly for more exposure and to lengthen episodes for more add revenue lol. Still a great show by me, but I understand your point.

This. Dragon Ball has always been my favorite anime. I would wait till the end of the season and watch all episodes at once online as I couldn't wait until a new one would show up on tv, haha. Good old times.

I also used to enjoy watching Yu-Gi-Oh and I also played the game. I never won on tournaments but my brother always did. >.>

Not sure if srs or just newfag...
I have no real preference, but more of my favorite shows are animes than cartoons. Not because of the artstyle, but because of the more mature attitude and subject matter.

Shows like Trigun and Rurouni Kenshin send you on emotional rollercoaster with the main character's ideology and vows.

And you must be watching the wrong (read teenage girl) animes moh, lots of animes have extremely bad ass male characters.
Cowboy Bebop in particular.

Yup, extremely easy[ to connect with some characters. As you said, due to subject matter.

I voted anime, I'm not really massively knowledgeable on them but the ones I have seen are pretty grown up.

I like the idea of intellectual and "grown-up" animation.

Can you explain what waifu is..?

Anime. Cartoons don't really get in depth with the story and characters as much as anime does. Don't get me wrong, cartoons are still great and all. Honestly in my opinion, anime beats cartoons by a long shot.
