AM2+ CPU in a AM2 motherboard, system bus speed downgrade

    I have a old GA-M68SM-S2L GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM2 - GA-M68SM-S2L (rev. 1.0)

    But i want to put P AMD Phenom X4 9750 CPU Processor 2.4G Quad Core Socket AM2/AM2+ - HD9750WCJ4BGH

here the CPU AMD Phenom X4 9750 CPU Processor 2.4G Quad Core Socket AM2/AM2+ - HD9750WCJ4BGH

Note: If you install AMD AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherbord, the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0(5200MHz) to HT1.0(2000 MT/s) spec; however, the frequency of AM2+ CPU will not be impacted. Please refer "CPU Support List" for more information.

You said it yourself in that last bit. The system bus speed will be reduced, meaning that the CPU will not perform as quickly as it is intended to. It'll work but don't expect the full punch of the Phenom on that motherboard. Also watch your voltage and check that your BIOS won't flip out with an AM2+ CPU in there.

What? The CPU will work fine but you can't just toss in an AM2+ CPU and not slow down the bus...

Yeah that is not possible. You would need to get an upgraded board to support the bus speed of that CPU. You could probably find a pretty cheap board on Newegg that should suffice

Quoted: "If you install an AMD AM3/AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherboard, the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0(5200 MT/s) to HT1.0 (2000 MT/s); however, the frequency of AM2+ CPU will not be impacted."

Just get a cheap ass AM2+ board. I don't think it's even remotely worth getting a phenom nowadays though, save your money and get a cheap used i5 2570/3570.

Debatable, a Phenom II can compete with the CPUs you've mentioned. If OP is getting a new board, may as well take it all the way up to Haswell+.

    In what universe?

CPU Benchmarks - Compare Products on AnandTech

Sandybridge and Ivybridge are pretty close in IPCs to haswell, and you can get a good ivybridge i5 for about 100 bucks so it's definitely worth it.
