The unholy apostrophe?

Why can't we use apostrophes in thread titles? A staff member can edit them in after, but normal users cannot actually make a thread with an apostrophe in it.

 

Something to do with some kind of exploit/bug IIRC - I'm sure I asked Govind at some point and he said it was for a reason.

What kind of exploit exactly? HTML is disabled, so there's no way for someone to run any code or scripts.

 

I was wondering about this as well.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out, whether certain members can type them in or if staff can after.

It is rather annoying. Is it not an exploit when Staff type it in afterwards?

 

Well.. I don't think staff members are going to do whatever is needed to run the exploit when changing titles

It's not the kind of thing I deal with or know a great lot about but it was scored off the ToDo list with that reasoning so I guess if it was quickly fixed on our version of vB it would've been done. Feel free to enquire with Govind+.

 

i agree, it's annoying. however, there's probably another symbol that looks identical/similar that uses a slightly different code (like alt+0123 vs alt+0124) that would suffice. i'll look into it if i remember

 

Insertnamehere's Vouches, Insertnamehere's gold shop, etc for the apostrophe.
Not sure about the quotation marks but i'm sure there could be a use for them as well

 

It sounds borderline retarded in most cases. (Mark store instead of Mark's store.) People's usernames are treated like pronouns generally, not a brand.

I've had this happen with virtually every thread I've made in the market. Not that I'm involved anymore, but a small fix would be cool.

Farcast raises some very good points. Alongside that most people create their username without necessarily pouring the brainstorming into it that is necessary for the brand to work well without the apostrophe. Majority of the services run aren't necessarily a branded business or anything but rather a personally run, odd-job type of service. For lack of a better example refer to the TV series Bob's Burgers. Their restaurant branding is styled that way too.

I never realized this, but I remember having a reason for not naming my vouch thread "Apith's Vouches".

Apparently staff can edit it in, was staff ever restricted from creating a title with an apostrophe? Was the only way to put it in through an edit? A non staff will have to test it.

 

Even if you're staff the problem exists at the point where you create the thread. When I've had to make a thread that has required it I've had to edit it in after the fact. Feel free to make a test thread though if you want and PM me the link for deletion afterwards.

Don't really see why you couldn't just of said "Ghasts gold shop" without the apostrophe, but hey, grammar nazis would be unsatisfied haha.
