Advice me on which step to take next?

Hi! I am pretty new to Sythe though I have been watching over for many years, unregistered. I'm 18 years of age and currently confused in life I guess :/

Last year life was going perfect and I was getting ready to start my computer science course at university, which I did start. That was in september. Now a few months down the line, life started getting difficult - lack of finance, travel was difficult, family issues etc.
Now idk why i'm burdening you guys with this but I just wanna know, all of you have different lives and different approaches to life and may have been in a somewhat similar situation.

What are some small steps I could take to try change things around?

Have I dug myself a grave?

And if you were in my shoes, at my age, what would you do now?

You have started digging a grave for yourself yet, and you are going to finish it if you keep this up. Be honest with your family. Wait for a good moment to tell them, and remember; that there is no perfect moment for this. Just take any good opportunity. You will have to tell them anyway.
If you financially can not afford to study, start working full time. Find work as soon as you can. Accept any offer, even if you do not like the job. While working, try to find a job you like or one that pays well. Work until you can afford to complete your education.

love your response man. I was thinking about working and yes I will definitely be apply for many jobs now. I will start saving and stuff and eventually get back into university I hope, though in UK i don't think you can just randomly get back into university? That's why I'm considering other countries that I could pay to study at instead, if you know of any countries that let you do this please name.

About telling my family, I am scared but I really do have to do it. I have to tell them as soon as I can and I will. Damn you're so right man, I'm gunna start sending out some applications asap.

Honestly the biggest piece of advice I could give, unless you plan on going into a trade such as engineering, medical field, etc.... leave school behind and don't think twice.

You lose out on so many years of earning power, while building an immense pile of debt while in school.

Depending on the country you live in, go into sales if it is something you are good at. Make sure you pick the right place where the earning potential is there.

School is mostly designed to make you a worker, once you get your first huge commission check you won't ever think about school again.

Every close friend of mine making $200k plus a year works in sales, and never once attended college.

Weigh out all of your options before going further into student debt, instead of spending 4 years going into debt you could spend 4 years earning as much as you want to, given you have the personality traits needed in sales.

Why did you stop going to university?

My plan would be to immediately get a job, anything to start bringing some money in. I'd tell my parents everything, so we can sort it out together. And then I'd contact the university and explain the situation. They are very understanding and likely will help you and maybe even let you back on your course. I've had a few friends drop our and start again.

If not, then apply elsewhere. Sitting at home feeling sorry for yourself won't get you anywhere.

You should also address the problems which lead you to this. If you ever need to talk, pm me.

well this went a little off-topic. Fairs to you both. Just to update you, the university have reviewed my situation and have allowed me to continue on and repeat the second semester.

Regarding both your life paths, they're both unique. University is for me a great leverage to have whilst simultaneously being able to pursue whatever I want to do outside the educational route. I need something like that to fall back on and that's what it provides, but also a degree.

Regardless of getting back into education I still need to focus on something. Right now it's a lazy summer, job searching with no outcome and just hanging out. I literally cannot find anything to do for an income, I need some sort of a project to take my mind off things, but finance is certainly holding me back.

What do you guys think? I really appreciate your discussions, been a while since I got a response really

Have you spoken to student finance England about starting back up?

You need to find something unique to stand out of the crowd. Easy to say, hard to do. Just find something you're interested in and see if there is anything you can do to take some level of responsibility, something to talk about during an interview.

A great thing to do is wait until your back in university, and join a society and or club. I'm the tresurer of the rugby at my university. Just something additional to going alongside getting a good degree.

    Hope you are feeling better!

Im thinking about that but it’s a long time away. I need something right now, gunna keep searching and hopefully it works out.

Yes I have applied for student finance, about to send my passport off having a non-British passport makes it a lot harder.

When i went university last year I literally clocked in and clocked out, made a couple of friends but it’s nothing outside of university. Didn’t join a society or anything like that either, this time round I’ll change things up hopefully.

I’ve been expandig some skills this summer in my spare time like video editing, music production etc. Been practicing them skills for a few years and I can sell those skills really but it’s hard to find a starting point (clients).

I wouldn't worry about it as much as you are. Just enjoy university, join clubs which you like and have fun while you're there. Get the best degree you can, that's the priority of this stage of your life (if you chose to, u can go into "sales" if you wanna follow that numbnuts advice). In your penultimate year you can pretty easily find internships, which for me has turned to a job for when I graduate!

I did study abroad also, really good for the CV and was super interesting.

If you want to continue in your computer science program, have you tried anything to get back in? I imagine all universities have some kind of appeal process. My university kicked me out of computer science too and I successfully appealed it.

i really do plan to travel for the 3rd year, to America specifically. Would be amazing. Where did you study abroad and was it worth doing it or should I go straight into the 4th year.

My reasons weren't sufficent enough to appeal the entire year but it's enough to appeal the second semester so i will grind it out and just move onto the 2nd after that. I'm 18 right now so i think i'm still okay, i do believe i have time. I just wanna know that i am going to get a job and i'll be okay doing computer science. it's something i really love. how did it go for you?

You would be surprised how easy it is to appeal. I guess it depends on the university and how valuable an open spot is, but for mine, I just took responsibility for my poor performance (I skipped a lot of midterms and exams which lead to me failing classes) and outlined a course of action on how I would improve. They don't want to hear excuses, they just want to believe that you are actually capable of improving. Eventually, your appeal goes to a board that reviews it (I'm assuming), so look at it from their perspective. They read a lot of appeals about people making excuses. When they see someone taking responsibility and it is obvious computer science interests you, they will probably be more sympathetic. I was on academic probation 3 times and kicked out once, managed to come out with my degree in the end. I did pretty well my upper years because the classes were more interesting. What interests you about computer science though?

Haha yeah it was fine. My university had a massive canteen which had a bunch of choice, noodles, rice, chicken etc. Super cheap too, like 10p a meal lol

Restaurants were also cheap, I could go to a relatively fancy place and get a meal for £6-10. So much to see in China mate, it's a crazy place.

everything. I want to develop apps and software and all sorts of things. Just knowing how to program baffles me. I really envy those who do know because it's a skill so amazing and I'd like to have that skill set. I am really desperate to try and completely restart the year and properly do it. Yes it goes to the board and they review it. Is it too late to get a review? or to even submit an appeal?

I honestly, truly want this now more than ever. The whole world revolves around programming. I want to take things to the next level and knowing programming could change my life, I need the degree really. I will definitely appeal.

you have truly inspired me, im honestly moved. I will try much harder, regardless of the situation im in, the lack of resources and all but yeah. I will grind.

I know i've typed a lot but i just remembered I wanted to mention that I made a list of things I want to achieve and stuff. My current goal is trying to grind some services maybe on here to try get some money to buy a laptop (an expensive one hopefully) that'll last me the entire course so that I can have a comfortable workspace. With that comes my ability to focus a lot more rather than relying on using my brothers desktop which is in his personal room haha.

also what can I say to the university to let them let me retake the entire year completely instead of a certain part.

china is interesting. don't know if i'll be ready financially to live by myself yet. I'll see closer to the 3rd/4th year or whichever it is. :p did you get a job afterwards by the same company? or does that really not happen?
