    This Name in this problem is not aimed at anybody or anything, just a random name.

    Problem
    --------
    Debbie Bought Some Apples At 25 Cents each. She ate 2 of them, and she sold the rest for 43 cents each.
    If her Profit was $3.21, how many apples did she buy?

    If you solve the above problem can you also explain how you did it.

    Uhm, 43-25 = 18 cents profit per apple, $3.21 total profit, so 3.21/0.18 = 17.8333. . . + 2 so she bought about 20 apples? I doubt that's right though :/

    I'm pretty sure that it's impossible. If she buys 22 apples then the profit is 3.10, and if she bought 23 apples the profit would be 3.28. Correct me if I'm wrong though...

    If she buys 22 it'd be $3.96 profit I think? and 23 apples would be $4.14 profit?

    Apples she has: X
    Amount she lost: 2
    Price/per 1: .43
    Total profit: 3.21

    Total Profit/Price per = 7.47. You cannot have partial apples, therefore she sold 7 apples. 7+2=9. She bought 9 apples.

    This is how you would solve the problem, but using apples and then having the profit and price per not give you a whole number is a stupid problem, therefore my answer could be incorrect. The whole answer could be incorrect.

    EDIT:
    This makes a lot more sense..forget about my answer.

    I'm guessing you already got your answer, but just letting you know... There isn't Pre AP Algebra in 9th grade bud ;) .
    I took Geometry in 9th grade and algebra in 8th grade...
    Pre alg is in 7th ;) But im ahead a year... but still u should be taking Algebra 1, not pre alg.. Plus, I'm pretty sure theres not a school out there that has Pre AP algebra..at my school, the only AP math classes u can have are Algebra 2+ (precalc, calc etc.)

    this isnt enough info, this is the equation i conducted, 36 is the difference between 43 and 25 times 2.

    25x - 36 + 43y = $3.21

    sorry this answer is late, but i hope u come back to read it and hope it helps :)

    okay so the first thing to profit is: money made - money spent = profit

    now we allready have our profit so we can substitute that in

    money made - money spent = $3.21

    x = amount of apples she bought

    we'll be looking at the two apples being eaten as a seperate cost OK
    two apples = 50c in money spent

    so now we get:

    money made - money spent - $0.50 = $3.21

    too make this equation easier ill get rid of the 50c

    money made - money spent = $3.71

    money made = x * 0.43
    money spent = x * 0.25

    so:

    0.43x - 0.25x = 3.71

    since these "x" terms are like terms we can now do:

    0.18x = 3.71

    or:

    0.18 * x = 3.71

    so now we need to get "x" on its own, we do this by dividing both sides by 0.18 which gives us:

    x = 3.71/0.18

    which gives us:

    x = 20.61(re-occuring)

    So, rounding up, this gives us 21 apples that she bought. If i've made a mistake with my math please correct me.

    This is probably late but the question is weird, from the looks of it you can't have it in any whole apples.
    Well this is how you do it for the ones confused.

    Profit is basically Revenue - Cost
    Revenue here is selling apples
    Cost is cost of apples

    So, with X being number of apples bought, the equation works like this:

    .43(x-2) - .25x = 3.21

    Revenue being 2 less apples.

    So in then it works out to 22.6111

    If you plug in 23 apples the profit works to be about $3.28 which is close to the answer.
