Windows XP or Linux?

Wine can allow you to emulate older programs, but I use CXOffice.

Cruel, yes CXOffice is aimed at particular software. It has a list of software known to work properly. You may install unsupported software, but there is more chance of failure.

Whoever said Windows XP has more features practically just compared UNIX to DOS. Cheeter, at least, knows what I mean by this in jest. Linux isn't always used as hosting, and is integrating more and more with the end-user as distributions grow. That is why there are usually choices between Desktop and Server Edition ISOs.

You can definately run Linux. From the start you'll notice an incredible boost in speed. With most Linux distros, Firefox will be included, and if you use a debian OS, everything is incredibly simple to install/manage.

Indeed. Ubuntu is a Debian base distro as well isn't it?
I also hear good things about Mandriva.

Linux is more effective in the way it utilizes CPU power and manages RAM, so if you don't have a high-end PC, Linux is a very good concideration.

Depends one ur own personal feeling, apparently they both can do what u want. I would download Ubuntu, and just try it out

Linux seems to run better on my old laptop, which takes about 10 minutes to load Windows Xp... But for a desktop I'd rather have Windows. I'm more familiar with it, and it's fine for me.

The only thing I like about linux is that they have the mini-os's that can run on the old pentium 1's and still be useful.

I'd go with Linux if you want to do regular things, such as the occasional game and just going on and spamming up message boards every day.

I'd go with Windows if you're a hardcore gamer and like to open your OS and replace parts without having to emulate or setup more than the actual game.

Hmmm... well seeing how all 3 fit all my basic needs (Photoshop/Illustrator/After Effects CS3), I use Mac OS X Leopard just cause it looks nicer than the other two and has better animations (don't bring up compiz fusion... the animations are flashier, but aren't as functional, nor are they as smoothly integrated into the OS...and Aero and Luna, they're just plain fugly). Also OS X is the only OS that runs Final Cut Studio which I'm more used to than the alternatives (Premiere Pro, AVID, etc...) I would have used Ubuntu on my secondary laptop, but my wireless card isn't compatible with it (tried ndsiwrapper and still doesn't work), so I'm stuck using XP on it.
