He only wants to build the wall to check off one of his campaign promises. That's literally the only logical reason. The wall won't keep drugs out like they continually say as the majority of drugs coming from Mexico travel over the bridge legally. It also won't keep criminals out or pretty much anything else. All it will do is cost billions of dollars.

The wall is just a physical representation of what trump wants to promote. Most drugs or smuggling happens on flights or across the border. Although just because its just a token thing to implement it does not mean he thinks it wont help his chances come time for reelection.
