This is another one of those great mysteries, something we will never know, something that bends your mind.

Colour.

We could all see colour COMPLETELY differently. I'll try to explain my way of thinking, using a scenario.

There is a group of children sitting in a classroom.

The teacher puts a colour onto a board.

The children look at this colour, the teacher says "this colour is red".

Now, when the children look at the board, every single child could be seeing a completely different colour on that board, but they have learnt that the colour they see is "red".

Given how complicated and amazing the eye is, this would not be unlikely.

I'm not sure wether you will understand my reason, as I'm not sure I can explain it enough.

Let me know if you understand it.

It wouldnt matter anyways. All the peope can differentiate the colors and they have common names for them.

It seems like most people that I've spoken to have experienced this train of thought. It's not logically impossible, yet personally, I think that there is no reason to think that it is true unless strong evidence is shown to support this idea.

Practically, this is true, yet I suppose it is rather interesting to think on.

I know it's not scientificly logical in the sense of the colour spectrum, but what about in the biological sense? In the way that our eyes and brains percieve a certain light arrangement which gives us a colour. The appearance of this colour, however, could be completely different to each indvidual. And this could never be proved, due to the fact that we all know a certain arrangement of light to be called a certain colour, so we would assume we are all seeing that colour as the same thing, when infact it could look completely different to us.

This is very hard to explain...

;)

It reminds me of the blind man's concept of color. If a man was born blind, He can never know what a color looks like, but he can still associate it with various things (concept conditioning)..

Hmm, I have my doubts. Perhaps there are minute differances from person to person, but I don't see in huge differances. My reason being I think if someone was looking at a schoolbus yellow object and said "Wow that's bright" they would be contradicted by someone who sees it as say purplish.

Wtf is a 'colour'? We say color where im from :D

jk you have a good point.

I've actually thought about this before, but putting into a wider spectrum.

For example, a mathematician may learn maths/math in a different way than say, an artist.

The really interesting thing is actually how the people learn and which ways they're tought.

http://www.trentu.ca/news/view/learn.html May shed light on this subject

Ok. Studies have been made before. I've heard this question many times. Studies have been made using different people.

What you are saying is that for example, the way I see red, could be the way you see purple. We could all be seeing colors differently.

Back to the studies. Colors have 3 variaties which changes what a color looks like.

These are:

Saturation (How much of a color)

Brightness (How much light energy reflects off a color)

Tint (The variable color group a color is in)

These 3 factors decide what a specific color looks like. Change any of the three within a color, even the slightest change, and the color will be different. It may look very similar, but will still be technichally different.

(look at color bars for example, google "color bars". People must have good, similar eyes in order for a picture on a television screen to look differently. I'm straying a bit off topic but some research about color bars should be interesting. Just don't feel like explaining them too, lol)

---

The Human Eye sees Brightness all the same. Think about it- if some things weren't as bright as we all see them, than some people would see light in the dark, and some people would see dark in the light. Anyways, this dosen't make sence. We see light in the light and dark in the dark.

Brightness is connected with Tint and Saturation. It inflicts How much you see. Without one of the three, just like an an energy wheel, the others cannot exist. There must be some of each group in Anything for it to exist.

Here is an example. If you are color blind, or you see colors differently from the way I do, you should not be able to see what I see in this picture in any way similar to the way I see it.

Here is another example, Once again, you wouldn't be able to see this in any way similar to the way I see it if you saw colors differently.

Anyways, Human eyes do see colors very very similarly, unless your eye is color blinded, or your eyes do not have a good connection with your brain. There are some ways on telling about color blindness, these above tests are just two of them.

(I saw numbers inside the circles. That's what you are supposed to see.)

Hold a box of crayns/markers/colored pencils whatever in front of 100 different kids, tell them to pick out the red one.

Proved.

dont you see colours because of the thingy on the marker? that wet thingy that you push on, that has a colour and we see that?

Well if the student were to think the color red was on a certain object and it was really the color orange I'm sure that student would be challenged at some point in his life on what he thinks the color red is.

This is why we have these test to determine if the person is color blind.

It isn't possible for the children to actually SEE another colour... The colour is caused by the reflection of certain light particles into the eye and as such they would see it as it is. They might think of a different NAME for it but unless they have some kind of colour blindness they will always SEE the same colour and their brain may just associate it with the wrong name.

I think the advent of film pretty much proves people see colors the same way.

If you split each frame into R G B, and reconstruct them on the movie screen, the reconstruction would probably look very wrong to anyone who saw red as yellow, for example.

Actually a colour is determined by Light. If it were dark in your room and say you had an apple it would appear darker because there was no light to reflect off of the apple.

It's not impossible, but it's very unlikely. I guess we'll never know...

I guess that its possible, but not likely since our genetic codes for the rods and cones in our eyes are all probably similar. As for the circles with bubbles, sadly, I am color deficient (color blind, whatever the fuck you want to call it). I could never see the numbers :(
