    Trying to connect my old laptop through ethernet although I do not get an internet connection, normally ethernets are fairly plug and play although it seems its not the case today, It shows as an unidentified public network, could anybody help me out?

    Make sure the IP, gateway and dns settings are set to automatic. Remove any static settings.

    Does the wireless adapter on the Laptop work?
    What port are you connecting to on your modem/router?
    Do you have a spare cat5 cable to test the physical connection?

    Are you connecting to a personal network or is this for school?

    Should automatically connect for you. If it doesn't there's either something wrong with the port (hasn't been activated) or the jack itself.
