So for the last year or two, I've been using iPage. They've been good to me so far and have a very low budget price. I've mainly used their databases and only host a few php scripts to send/retrieve data. However, my business is now becoming far more popular with our latest development and I'm in need of a better server.

I'm fishing around cloud hosting for my solution. I want a linux OS with good SQL included.

What I don't have the knowledge of is what I need.

Do I need a quad core with 16GB of RAM? do I need more? Less? I guess I should explain the stresses that will be on them. We'll get plenty of traffic maybe just under 1,000 per day. As well as 10x that in database requests from iOS applications. Which run through php scripts on the server. I need a fairly high speed.

With our latest developments I may be required to host clients websites and databases on our server too. However, I'm not accounting for this just yet.

I'm pretty clueless of what's required when it comes to renting rack space, as I'm just used to your normal web hosting with a decent cPanel for my experience.

If anyone is a little more clued up in the field I'd appreciate you help.

Judging from what you've said you don't actually know what you need in terms of computing power... so I would suggest cloud hosting. In terms of where to go, that ones up to you. Google/amazon are typically more expensive (and more reliable?) where as linode/digital ocean are typically cheaper (and less reliable?)

in brackets coz i've never experienced any reliability issues with linode or digital ocean. Anyway, I use digital ocean to host pretty much all of my projects and a few of my sites have pretty heavy traffic (more than your demands) which i host (per site) for 40 dollars per month.

All of this being said, cloud hosting will let you scale, if you're finding you need more/less computing power scaling up/down is really quick and easy. You should also consider that most cloud hosting services don't have "cpanels" like you're used to, you can obviously install them, but to do so you'll need some level of experience with the commandline. So you'll need someone capable of configuring a server to your specific needs.

If you happen to choose digital ocean... https://www.digitalocean.com/?refcode=792f9d9c0e82 ty^^ if you need someone to help set up a server, or install a cpanel, you can find plenty of people capable on freelance sites (or hint hint, i might be able to help)

Thanks for the responses, I went with Poundhost as I wanted a UK provider everything is setup they offered Odin on a dabian OS so I went with that. Fortunately it seems I've gotten more than my requirement. Just in the process or migrating servers and transferring domain names.. On a weekend, not much fun.

    This can be closed now.
