Oh god...

[I Bleed Duke Blue]

Warning: There will be some ranting by myself, and possibly others, I realize these updates are controversial and people will disagree with my stance. Argue your points respectfully and I will return the favor.

And in another "Power to the Players" moment, I am shaking my head yet again. Anyone see yet that they're polling whether or not people want a change in skillcapes?

There will be a further poll if it passes to see what the extent of the changes are. I feel like small modifications like fixing the clipping on them would be cool, but outright changes would be so maddening it might actually finally push me over the edge towards quitting Rs3 for good.

Why? Well, go look at the "enhanced" fire cape.

Jagex's graphical re-works and modifications have almost always been far worse than their predecessors. While not everyone agrees on this, it is my main opinion behind being scared shitless of Jagex updating something as iconic as the skill capes.

What are your thoughts? If you do think the enhanced fire cape is ugly, how much do you trust Jagex to actually be able to pull off a good rework?

And a further poll looks like it's definitely coming...83 percent voted yes. Smh @ the RS community, how anyone could trust Jagex to graphically update something for the better baffles my mind. The graphical updates + solomons + squeal + treasure hunter items are my number 1 most hated thing about Runescape 3 / Eocscape.

[sm321]

I think it looks very modern and up to date with current games. I suppose you have to update a game to keep up or no-one will play. There's always 07 if you prefer the old style.

Lol modern? The whole hook of Runescape was that it didn't look modern at all. People never played Runescape for the graphics.

I'm not completely against graphical reworks, but I am mostly after what Jagex has done in the past with them. I don't get annoyed because Solomon's+TH+ cosmetic gear isn't immediately available to me, I get annoyed because it is ugly as sin 90 percent of the time and I laugh at people that spend real money on it.

Runescape 3 is not modern looking, it is cartoony looking, in my opinion. Also that Enhanced fire cape looks better in a picture than it does in game. Concept art is almost always a sham.

Besides, this is just more proof Jagex/ members of jagex lie constantly:

Enhanced fire cape look pretty bad IMO

Luckily you can still wear the old one. Enhanced fire cape used by trading in the three capes from Fight caves or w/e

I wouldn't know, never done em.

But yeah, I'm not a fan. I know some are. It's whatever. If they completely change skill capes and don't offer the option of keeping the old ones, I'm going to be salty. Mainly because like I said, I don't TRUST Jagex to actually IMPROVE them.

[ughh..]

It would be better if enhanced fire cape wasn't just a cosmetic (it's also really ugly). I'm keeping the 3 capes because they are better in stats and looks.

Hopefully skill capes end up fine

Here we go again. Yeah Jagex update the armor! Armor looks like shit.

All the new stuff in Runescape doesn't look modern, it looks cartoony and childish.

[Sanctuary]

I haven't liked the looks since 2011 - since before Rune turned into that weird cyan color. Every so often I get the hankering to play, but then I log in... kills it.

I enjoy the current skillcapes. It'd be a shame to mess them up like the rest of the items.

You realize how dreadful it really looks when you log into World 2 and nothing is recognizable and it looks like you're in a comic book.

The saradomin cape has more crits than the magic tzhaar cape

[GrinGo]

They're not lying about anything. They said they don't want to update it because they feel it might upset those who like the way that the capes look. All they never said is that they do agree with what was posted, they took a neutral side to the argument to appease both sides. They put it up to the players to determine what happens and by the way it looks the players want the cape changed. When we pay for membership, this is what we're paying for. Content. Wether it be new, or updating outdated parts of the game we're getting exactly what we're paying for which believe it or not is a good thing.

I for one like the new look. To be completely honest, the old firecape looked like crap. Yeah, it's really neat that it's an animated cape but by the way this one looks it seems like there's going to be some nice effects this cape has. I think the clipping is the cape actually burning as you wear it as it should be a cape of fire.

Don't be such a hipster with every change that is made to the game. Some of them are actually quite good. Changing a cape isn't something to quit the game over, especially when you have a voice in the matter.

When you have a few thousand hours in on getting those capes it is.

Jagex can update their game all they want as far as graphics. I'm more worried about their game core updates...

ROFL at Hipster.

I am anything but a hipster. I have put up with, and "adapted" to all of the changes Jagex has made --- for better or for worse. I simply stated my opinion - most of the graphical reworks by Jagex are terrible. Now, before you troll this notion any further, just think about it..Jagex offers half the old stuff on Solomon. A cynic would say they did that to appease the nostalgic players, while someone looking at it more logically would figure Jagex is doing it because they realize some people just prefer the older stuff. Not because it was older, because it was simply better.

Hence Legacy Mode. Hence retro overrides. Hence old animations and attack styles.

Quitting RS 3 would not be SOLELY because of the capes being changed, and nowhere did I intimate such. I simply meant that a cultivation of all of these changes, that I personally disagree with, would result in me finally having enough (the capes being the final straw, if you will).

I simply do not like the direction the game is going in. Cartoony graphics, pay to win, free xp, even Drumgun was bitching about it...and he has a lot more reason to bitch than me, given he is the number 1 player and spends far more time on the game than I do.

I'm sorry if your hipster comment was meant innocently, but it really rubbed me the wrong way...because I have never quit because of ONE update, but the masses of updates Jagex are churning out could be considered cringe-worthy by many (making me sort of an anti-hipster in that regard). I have continued after EoC, I have continued after xp lamp abuse, effigy abuse, prismatic xp abuse, etc.

Skill capes better have a toggle option or an override option for the old stuff, I spent far too long getting them for Jagex to graphically "enhance" them. We've seen how well that's worked out. While aesthetics are a small part of the game for some, I feel like some things just don't need outright changing.

Lastly, this first poll does not confirm that people want it graphically reworked. Some may just want it tweaked as in clipping fixed, textures amplified..etc. The 2nd poll will really show what people want, so you're jumping to conclusions based on this first ambiguous poll.

If Jagex had actually released concept art, maybe there'd be something appropriate to actually work on.

Also I don't really know how much I'd consider skill cape reworks being important content. This would take away resources from other content that people may find more worthwhile. I'm all for modifications if the mass of RS wants it, though just because something is the popular choice doesn't make it the right choice..all choices are really just a matter of preference. That's why I would be completely okay with new capes, just hoping that they let others keep the older style. Jagex has allowed almost everything else to be done the original way, so why not these capes too?

Ultimately, tl;dr: Fine with new capes, so long as I can keep my older ones that I worked hard for. Or fine with modifications on current capes, such as texture tune-up and clipping fix.

[2332]

I agree, they've been ruining looks of.. every single thing in game since 2011.

"Jagex ruining stuff with reworks since 2011."

[I Bleed Duke Blue]

I like some of the newer models of stuff, but it's like I said, I'd be scared with Jagex tampering with an item that's so old and iconic.

I wonder if they'll ever change Partyhats ~_~.

I shouldn't even joke about that..never say never with Jagex.

Also it's like I said before, the game should be focused on big content updates like new areas, quests, end game content versus changing existing content that doesn't need to be fixed. I'm glad they give people the choice now, but it's not like the graphics changes past 2011 were polled. Jagex is never going to be able to compete with games graphically, that was never and is never going to be its hook. A java game can only go so far.

But maybe Grin is right, let's see what the 2nd poll consists of. It's obvious people want some type of change. I'd be much less against a change if it wasn't for Jagex's track record in alterations.

Also, GrinGo, there are actual employees of Jagex who have said on glassdoor (an employee review site of companies) that the upper management at Jagex is fickle and change their minds on an absolute dime. One such review said "Making changes to Runescape inevitably upsets some of the established players. Unless the changes bring in more players then the result is an overall loss. Changing things back again doesn't bring back the players you lost but can lead to more losses"

So there you go, Jagex has no idea what to change. One day it's nothing, the next it's everything. They have little conviction in their decisions and often backtrack but never seem to outright scrap something, even if it's pure shit. They also point out that since Runescape has taken off, none of their secondary projects have been remotely successful, such as FunOrb, Mechscape, Stellar Dawn, 8 Realms, Transformers Universe...etc etc). They are basically a "rudderless" company with no sense of direction.

I agree that concept art generally looks way better than implementation, which is sad because I like the way that cape looks as far as picture wise. I will however agree with you that everything anymore is ridiculous. I am glad that legacy brought back the correct armor levels though I found it kind of bs that you needed 50 defense for rune -.- and yeah the new rune armor color is bullshit too. I also think that you shouldnt have to pay for the old graphic overrides It gets increasingly pathetic as the game goes along and they struggle to achieve the money they so desperately need.

Yup, basically Jagex just lacks conviction. They don't believe in their updates, no matter how they try to spin it or what facade they try to put on to make it look like they actually believe in their decisions. There is constant back-tracking, tweaking, etc. New armors were meh, Enhanced Fire cape meh, don't really believe in Jagex to update the skill capes without making them totally unrecognizable. But you know 6 months will go by and then the overrides will be there for the old shit.

Quit rs3 and play 07 if u really don't like the graphics, because we all know the future graphics of rs3 are actually bad and they do not look good, armour wise atleast.

Yes, play a game with minimal updates and erase almost a decades worth of work because the graphics are terrible. This just isn't the correct way to go about things, in my opinion.

Better to fight the changes, sometimes there's nothing you can do about it, but sometimes Jagex does relent - Legacy mode for as close to Pre-Eoc as people are going to get, aside from 07...Retro armor overrides, old animations + attack styles in Legacy. I could go on.

If I do end up quitting RS, when that day comes, it will be all-together.

Like I said, this update alone would never be the sole reason I quit, I just think Jagex has a better chance of getting more subscribers than WoW has than actually making a good looking graphical re-work. But no worries, they have plenty of blind fanboys that love progress for the sake of progress.

I actually like a lot of the content Jagex comes up with - quests - skills - events - dailies - BUT I don't know why they always feel the need to aesthetically change something. I'll reiterate...Runescape's hook was NEVER, AND NEVER WILL BE, GRAPHICS!! It's as simple as that when it's run on archaic Java + just a browser game. But they keep forcing it, and the more they force it the more the rush it...the more they rush it the more it is terrible.

I realize I've ranted quite a bit in this thread, but it's frustrating. I don't want to undue all my work in the core game and go to 07 completely. I don't want to lose all of the good content RS 3 can offer + does offer currently..I just don't understand a lot of the changes. If most of the updates are changing inherently cosmetic gear, why do they need tampering with in the first place? If it isn't broken, break it. Seems to be the Jagex motto.

Maybe Jagex realizes that pissing off the veterans is a necessary risk to try and expand their brand and keep it alive. EVERY attempt at a game post Runescape has failed miserably, so Jagex needs to keep the cash cow that is Runescape churning. So if they believe alienating the veterans, who I admit are the minority (how couldn't they be when the game is so old + different now), to get new players is the right thing to do, then they have every right to do it. It is their game after all. I just don't think it's right. And it's clearly not getting enough new players in, as is...because it's simply copying your typical cookie-cutter MMO. Runescape has undeniably lost its niche, if not completely than definitely to a certain extent...thus it loses its uniqueness, loses its luster, and loses its player base, dying a slow but sure death. I'd like to be there for its death and smile on the memories, but Jagex is making it hard. That may sound sappy as it's just a video game, but it was a big part of my childhood...would seem right to give it a "proper" send off. But Jagex has nothing after Runescape right now, so they best tread lightly, as the great Walter White once said .

This post not an attack on you Russian - just my general thoughts.
