Need a VPS

[NikeShoes]

Hello Sythe,

I am in need of a good VPS for selling gp. I have not used a VPS to sell before, but I would like to start using one as an extra precaution.

Does anyone have any recommendations for which VPS I should use? I need one that is reliable (no down time). And of course it should be able to handle RuneScape.

I am considering euroVPS because a few of my friends praise it, but I am wondering if there are cheaper options that are just as good.

Also, any recommendations on how good of a package I need? I need the game to run smoothly so I can deliver gp to my buyers quickly while recording the process. But these packages get pricey fast!

Thanks,
Nike

Sythe runs on Ramnode. I've been using it since May and I've never had any downtime. Unless you want to use a decicated VPN then this is your best choice. The prices are also the lowest you will find, and this is without losing out on quality/stability.

Thanks sith.

I actually do have a dedicated VPN that I can use for free through my university. I wasn't planning on using this though since Jagex will see the same IP being used across accounts.

Your post implies that it is possible to safely sell gold with a dedicated VPN? How would this be possible?

My plan is to just use a new VPS for each new account I make and a "not dedicated" VPN to ensure that there is no tracking possible via IP. And constant deletion of the files Jagex stores on the VPS. This should be the optimal method yes? (coupled with basic strategic trading ingame like using the duel arena)

If I understand correctly you were thinking of purchasing one VPS subscription for every account you trade gold on. If you intend to buy more than one subscription, then it becomes too costly. The basic idea behind a dedicated VPN subscription is that you pay the company money for anonymity. Usually you get a lot of bandwith, good speeds and multiple locations to connect to. What this does for you is that for a small amount of money (almost always cheaper than renting a VPS), you get access to multiple IPs (although not static) in a wide range of countries.

So if you'd like to mask your IP for gold trading, you can do that by either using a VNC client and doing the trades on a VPS, in which case your IP address pool is limited to the amount of VPS subscriptions you have, or by buying a VPN subscription and connecting to a specific country consistently on every account you use (i.e. you only use 'Germany' for one account, 'Sweden' for another, ...) etc. The only disadvantage is that if you use a VPN service, your IP isn't static, as it would be on a VPS. That isn't necessarily bad, though.

To be frank, unless Jagex has stepped up their game since 2011, then you don't even really need a VPN unless you're going to be moving billions of GP daily. I used to run a modestly sized operation without a VPN and I never ran into any issues. If you have an Asian IP, I heard it can get slightly complicated, though, as they flag those due to the stigma associated with being asian and trading gold.

Although I do not sell frequently, it is always in mass quantities (many billions) when I do. So I need to make sure I am using the safest methods possible.

Please forgive me if my reasoning is wrong. I am not an expert with this sort of technology.

Along with IP address, Jagex is able to see the "fingerprint" of your computer yes (I forget the technical name)? And so any accounts that log on from the same computer can be flagged as being connected by Jagex regardless of whether you are using a VPN.

So using a new VPS for each new account ensures a new fingerprint for each account. And using a non dedicated (not static ip) VPN on each VPS ensures that none of the accounts can be flagged because of sharing the same ip.

Wouldn't only using a VPN or only using a VPS not provide any protection?

(Also for clarification. VNC is what you use on the VPS to allow your main computer to use the VPS like a normal computer? That is, the VNC allows you to have a visually interactive desktop rather than just a command line?)

[sith kid]

On your command-line server you install a GUI (Graphical User Interface). so that the server can draw windows, etc.. Then you install a VNC server so that you can connect to the server and display that very GUI to you. Think of VNC like a substitute for a monitor.

If your computer is good enough, you could simply make a couple of virtual machines on it and use those in conjunction with a VPN. That would be the cheapest solution because virtual machines are free, and VPNs are generally cheaper than VPSes. That way, as you said, each VM (virtual machine) would have its unique 'fingerprint' and a non-constant IP, albeit from the same region (eg for each account you'd stick to one specific region with a diverse set of IP addresses).

If you're moving billions and you can't run VMs on your PC due to hardware limitations, then you should probably get a good VPN subscription (I can hook you up with the one I use, these guys are at the top of their game) and multiple VPSes, if that pays off. I strongly recommend you use virtual machines, though.

There are other considerations to be had though. All gold trades are traceable, so if you generate the gold on a main account and then trade it to a "clean" account (VM+VPN) and sell it off from there, they can still trace back the gold to the trade where the sold gold originated from.

So unless you're going to be running a bot farm with each bot in its own unique environment (or with a lot of bots in one environment, assuming they're throwaway accounts and you don't mind them being associated with one another), and then transfer that gold to a seperate, anonymous environment, then there's not much point in taking these precautions, because it'll all get traced back to the weakest link.

Thanks again for your excellent help sith.

For this particular series of sales, I plan on distributing the gp from two main accounts to two seemingly unrelated different accounts. The sales will be done on those accounts (will sell all gp on one account, wait for some amount of time, and sell the gp on the other) with PA. Some of the gp will be traded to random players along the way to ensure that the hub (central node) is not only connected to rwt accounts.

I will look into the VM option. I have a high end gaming computer, so it is certainly possible that I will be able to utilize that method.

I am interested in your VPN, but I also have concerns about using a VPN. Please refer to my other thread in these subforums if you are interested. I am suspicious that using a VPN might actually put one at greater risk than not using a VPN!

[sith kid]

Best of luck, then. It's also not 'my' VPN per say, I can't even get a commission by referring you, because these people take anonymity so seriously that they won't allow the VPN credentials to be linked to the user, and they keep no logs, either. Heck, you can even pay with bitcoins and essentially anonymously pay for and use an anonymity service. Whacky, haha.

I read your other thread, and I'd like to point out that, first of all, due to the sheer volume of IPs available it is unlikely that you'll consistently land one that is being used to farm gold elsewhere, and secondly, even if you do, all that Jagex can see is that you're using an anonymity service. It is their duty to respect that you wish to remain anonymous and understand that because you use a VPN, it is possible that you'll occasionally use an IP that has been flagged for botting in the past, with no serious implications. Whether or not this has much of an impact on your account is questionable, but the fact reamins - gold buyers should and are obliged to accept the risk that comes with RWTing, which means that even if you do get banned for trading off a lot of gold (which is HIGHLY unlikely, especially with these precautions), you'll still get paid via PA and cannot be held liable for bans.
