By crime, I mean theft, but I don't go into specifics, not even theft of what.

Only if you define crime as "whatever other criminals say is a crime".

The common law court system is adversarial. Where there is no injury or damage to another party, there is no standing. If you have a lawyer who knows anything at all it should be impossible (excluding judicial corruption and misconduct) for a person to be convicted for substance abuse.
