i would say carry on the darkness over to the right side so there isent so much light over there an the texts needs a bit of work. it is very un balanced, you can almost cut the whole right side off.

Ok got some time now.

So blending could've been way better if you didn't destroy-smudge your render, Render placement is "ok". White Dark contrast doesn't do it for me, mainly because the render has different lighting. Color of his eyes could've been brought back and it feels LQ because of the blurs on the sides of the render. Try a smaller canvas so u have less space to fill when starting out.

Because the render has a feathered crop around it, putting text behind it is not really a good idea. Also the patterned background is too harsh around edges, I'd recommend vignetting it.

Good job on the tag. I like the concept, and I get a nice feel from the piece. I also enjoy that little white line crossing the weapon: it's a nice visual and even sprouts up the "ching" sound of a sword clashing another sword in my head. Personally I'm not as big of a fan of the blurring/smudging effects around the render. Something just doesn't quite fit about it... not sure what. The only other thing I can be nitpicky about is the border, I don't feel that it adds much to the effects you've implemented.

You need to work on lighting and depth. It's not a bad sig at all. I don't like the grid background and the whole tag seems a little LQ to work on these issues try to work with c4d and try bluring some and smudging some and for lighting there is a lot of different things you can do. You can use a soft brush and smudge it with regular setting hard brush, you can soft brush a spot of light and gausian blur it and set to color dodge of something or you can use bubble c4d's which are pretty nice. Also it's generally best to keep your focal (render) lighter and the outsides darker so your eye gets drawn towards the focal rather than the light area. Good luck in the future

 

The light source is coming strongly from the right side of the piece, try adding some more light in areas light would reach the render. The blending isn't half bad because it goes with the whole smokey/misty vibe which works. Try to stay away from text in tags until you really know how to implement it well, just draws your eye away from the focal.

I really apologise if this comes across as harsh, as it is a really great foundation for tagging, but the more that I pick it to pieces the more you can improve


I'm a firm believer of only having text included in a tag if it makes it better - and typically, it doesn't. I tend to omit any kind of typographic element completely, since creating a piece with an effective type addition requires a lot of time and skill for such a small feature.

Next order of business - don't frame ya tags, as it isolates and constrains the flow. On the topic of flow, don't use grid backgrounds... In fact, avoid straight lines altogether. The horizontal and vertical lines create a rigidity, not to mention it creates a conflicting sense of direction.

Your main aim should be for the eye to focus on an area (the focal point) and flow smoothly in a fluid direction across the piece.

Create definitive lighting sources (even if they're just out of the canvas), and then orientate your tag design around them. Think about how a photographic image would look if you had a lightbulb above the subject, to the right/left, or beneath it, and then mirror that.

Avoid smudging your render in to the background - crisp lines and different methods of blending are the way to do things. Have a look at some other tags from users like Tr1bal, kovan, squidge, and other tagging veterans to get an idea about how they ace these methods.

Depth is created through the usage of light and dark, highlights and shadows, as well as blurring and sharpening. Though - avoid over-sharpening, which is commonly done by a lot of taggers.

 

I'd like to say I have improved on my fundamentals since I made this tag but I won't know til I make another tag. Any who I don't mind harsh criticism, it's probably how my criticism comes off as. Without pointing out the floors in someones work they can't hope to get better and beating around the bush through niceties and euphemisms often doesn't help. Thanks for your in-depth response.
