Say someone wanted to set up a botfarm with 12 bots. Do they need 12 subscriptions for each bot at £5 each or is there a cheaper way of doing it?

You could try buying membership from sythe users. I'm pretty sure you can get it cheaper that way.

You would need to buy 12 membership pins from rs, but only 1 vip from a botting website such as tribot

Buy RS membership via RSGP, it will come out cheaper if you got the bread
