Do americans really think their society is one of liberty and free speech still?

You can't board a plane without getting your junk touched. You can't go to the store without having all your financial transactions logged and your face recorded. You can't leave the country without government permission. There are inland checkpoints asking to see your papers.

Do they still see themselves in that light? Yes. They're view is one an idealistic portrayal which couldn't be further from the truth. No other country has such aggressive internal and foreign policies. In many ways Nazi Germany is heaven sent when compared to modern day America. It's reliance on secrecy is disgusting and the justification of it is even worse.

Relatively free. The TSA is a crock of shit. The media is at least somewhat controlled by the government. Yes we pay taxes. Yes we have the god damned Patriot Act. But we do let people say what they want. Freedom of speech is stronger here than most anywhere else. We protect hate speech. We don't jail people for insulting people (I'm looking at you England). So I don't feel so bad about it.

That's the idea here, the idea of pulling yourself up from your bootstraps and doing something to better your life and the lives of your family and relatives.
