Does anyone have any stories/ know of those who are in or have gone through medical school to get a M.D.? What do you think it's like? Do you think it's worth going to school and stressing your self for so long? Just asking for some community discussion here as I am working toward a B.S. in Biochemistry/Biology and planning on pursuing that!

    Thanks guys.

My goal is to go to Stanford and eventually become a surgeon. I'm setting myself for a lot of years of stress, but I'm actually kinda looking forward to it. When I achieve my goal, I know I'll be happy. Plus, I'll be a surgeon. :D

Syph, im currently in Medical School at the Moment, I started out with an Undergrad in Biology and then on to RN (worst mistake of my life), and im working from there. I attend Rice University Downtown Houston where im currently studying Medicine my goals in my life is to become a M.D. in General Surgery. WOW stories well lets see ive been an intern for a year, at Rice Medical Center, Doctors treat you like shit because your going through Medical School and you have not achieved what they have, you work countless hours 48 hour shifts 3 days on call and you never get any sleep. Your residents treat you like there children make you tie there shoes and clean up there mess from there patients but id have to say you learn loads and its loads to take in. If you have not yet started residency my advice to you is clear every distraction out of your life before you do it, study hard because your state Triage boards are hell, input all your time to reading and research, sleep when you can if your backs against the wall ask for help, fight for what you want and don't let anyone tell you any different, but you have to love what you do in order to succeed if you don't love this profession you wont make it.

BTW the worst thing my Resident or Attending has made me do is bring him Lunch exactly at 12:00 Every day for 5 weeks because i failed a Triage exam.

    What's depicted above sounds alot like what it will be. I have a friend who just finished his undergrad;
had to go maintain a certain standard in academic performance
had to pass a nation-wide test called GAMSAT, which every aspiring med student must achieve
had to then pass the interview

he said that he studied for about 12-14 hours a day and had many sleepless nights, i'm fairly certain you have to love what you do, however i'm pretty sure in all continents there are always a lack of doctors, good luck!

Yes i scored a 53 on my GAMSAT, i was disappointing in myself i knew i could have done better but I had children and when i tell you the least of distractions will severely cut you at the waist side. You must be absolutely sure the medical Field of Elite Doctors, Residents and Interns are what you want before you proceed from your undergrad....

My uncle's close friend is a surgeon and he's rich as fuck. Not only that, his wife is a orthiodologist (bone specialist) or whatever.

I've been to their house it's like a 15 bedroom house by some lake but nah it's fucking ridiculous how rich they are, they have a rolls royce, an orange mclaren mp4 12c and their 23 year old son has a porsche 911 turbo.

I guess those who make it to the top levels after medical schools do well and is well worth the study. My uncles friend did about 12 years after Uni of extra study before he got into the neurology.

It's very rewarding. To help people on a daily basis and get a decent salary is awesome. Though honestly, money shouldn't be your driving force is becoming a doctor/something in medicine. If you want money, go to business maybe. Everyone I know says once you get into med school, it's a lot less stressful. It's a lot of work, but it's all worth it imo. Just always remember what your end goal is. It's what's keeping me going  My friend is in med school now and loves it. He got into one close to home so it's all good for him. :)

Eww, Stanford. Fuck Stanford!!!! (even though it's my dream med school too, I hate them rightnow ^_^) Where do you go now if you don't mind me asking? Also, have you started preparing for the MCAT?

My uncle graduate from Johns Hopkins Medical School back in like the early 80s. He's a radiologist. Anyways, he loves his job now, but he said medical school and residency were a bitch.

Edit: Residency should be somewhat easier now. They have a cap on how many hours you can work each week during residency (I think it's 80 now), I don't believe that they had this back then.

Also, the future of medicine is kind of uncertain now with obamacare. It might not be as lucrative of a field anymore in a few years.

Edit2: I know that money shouldn't be a driving factor, but if you're paying for your own education yourself, it is. If tuition keeps rising and you can't make a decent income as a doctor, you're going to suffer your entire life. Also, something to consider, rural area hospitals often pay much more for doctors than urban hospitals. Just a thought.

Edit3: My uncle also makes a multi-million dollar salary. They live in a big ass house, get new cars all the time, kids went to private schools growing up and top tier private colleges, and they take very expensive vacations. He's made enough money to where he could have retired years ago.

Wow, thanks for all of the advice guys. I'll definitely take this to heart.

And I forgot to mention I'm still relatively young. Only about 50 credits into my undergrad. So I have time to figure out my life :)

Lol. Medical school is a lot like law school. Incredibly competitive, incredibly costly, incredibly taxing, but incredibly worthwhile.

I'm assuming that you're referring to sports? I'm still a sophomore (big dreams). So, no, I haven't started preparing for the MCAT. It's been a dream of mine to become a surgeon since I was 6 when my brother has a traumatic head injury and almost died. Although, over the years, I've changed from wanting to become a neurosurgeon to a cardiothoracics surgeon. :)

Med school won't be either with the amount of doctors going to the Caribbeans and other mediocre med schools, I'd recommend you focus your courses in a broad direction which opens up more opportunities if your current goal falls through or by the time you're ready to med school just doesn't seem worth it to you anymore.

Exactly. As much as we'd like to ignore it or not believe it, there is actually a surplus of doctors. Well I can't really say that, but to some extent there is competition for jobs as a doctor. In college all you need is I think 1 year of Chem, 1 year of Bio and 1 year of Physics. So just fulfill the minimum requirements for med school but also enroll in other classes, classes you feel like you will enjoy learning.

Getting into a med school is no joke. You can't expect to do the 'bare minimum' and get in. Between the MCAT and internships, you really have to be headstrong and focused.... Idk whether it's accurate to say there are 'too many doctors', but it's fair to say, doctors will ALWAYS be needed. Compared to a communications major, finding work as a doctor is far easier.

Actually its becoming much easier to get into med school. Like I said above medical schools such as the one in St. Kitts will take anyone with the money to fund their studies. A lot of countries are getting into it due to the high international fees I know people who go to St. Kitts, India, and other countries to get into med school then do their exams over here to become licensed.

The same thing occurs with law school where most law schools accept people with the money to get into them. A lot of jobs are becoming competitive and you really have to be in the top 10 percentile to have a good chance of being employed during and immediately after studies.

If you really want to become a doctor only a doctor can really tell you how the job is, how worthwhile it is, etc. I'd recommend talking to them because most of us aren't doctors or gone through the process and may be deterring you from what you want to do.

One thing I find good about the doctor path though is there are many alternatives you can fall back on which may be more fascinating to you such being a chemist at a pharmacy or something similar.
