Have you ever...

Have you ever gone on Facebook or simply searched a long lost childhood friend, only to find out that they did/have done something you never expected.

I just recently searched for an old childhood friend of mine. He was one of my best friends, introduced me to Runescape and several other of my favorite childhood games. From grades 2-7 I would go over to his house every day (if I could, i.e. I couldn't if he was grounded which happened sometimes when he fought with his sister). I just recently found out that he's gay. Now I don't care if someone is gay or not, but this came as a complete shock. If you knew this kid, you would be shocked as well. He hit puberty at like 6 (not literally, but still). He's 6'6 (white), is a bamf, Morgan Freeman voice, goes to a catholic school, and has a catholic family. It just comes as a shock. I haven't seen him since I was 13, so a lot can change since then, of course. I haven't talked to him in a year or two. I don't care if he's gay, he's still my friend, it's just something that I didn't see coming. I'm sure his dad isn't too thrilled, just knowing how he is.


Anyways, what have you found out?

 

Hmm I went through the same thing pretty much, just in a different form.

I had a friend ( which is still my friend, I guess) that I've known for a couple years. I moved away and sadly didn't stay in touch because I was not into social networks like myspace hi-five ect. One day I decided to look him up, I found him and I found out he's in and out of jail for drug abuse, he steals and gets in fights constantly. This shocked me to a max. Never saw that coming. :\

 

Ya, I don't keep in as much contact with him as I used to. I had a Myspace when it was popular, but he didn't. Now he has Facebook and I don't use it. I still have his home phone number, but I haven't called him in like 2 years or so. I talked to him on RS probably a year or so ago, though.

 

I honestly wouldn't trust people who say they are gay at age 15 (which I am assuming is his age according to your post)...The don't really know what they are and won't until they actually leave home and discover them selves....now I am not saying that he isn't gay, I just don't think kids at that age really know what they are. If they do, than awesome, but 99% of the time, they don't...

It might just be a phase...

I have had similar experiences, but not really over facebook. I have turned on the news and saw someone I know was found dead...Has happened twice. They were trying to be "gangstas" and got killed for it...Happens a lot where I grew up (toronto) not as much as other places, but still, it is pretty crazy. Considering you were playing pokemon games and things with them like 3 years earlier...

I moved when I was 12, saw him last when I was 13, kept in contact for many years, last talked to him on the phone 2 years ago, last talked to him online a little over a year ago.

 

Because you said in your original post, that you hadn't seen him since you were 13 ( assuming he is the same age as you) than you said you haven't talked to him for a couple years...

When I was 13, we didn't really have internet that was afford able for people like me, so I just assumed that when you last seen him, was when you last talked to him.

 

Yeah i went through that, one of my best friends when i was a kid surprised me; i googled his name and i found out he is the prime suspect of a murder in my local area. He was like the nicest person ive known in my life and you can imagine my surprise when i read the article.

 

Literally 2 days ago found out my mate is gay but he don't know I know, its awkward, only me and another friend know but we don't wanna tell anyone, well hes got a girlfriend atm so hes bisexual I guess...

 

Unless hes told you that he is gay you don't know for sure.



I've never had a family member/friend "come out".

I got something related to this...my frend who showed me runescape became Gay too and sometimes as kids he tried to kiss me ..and i stop talking to him

 

One of my best friends with whom I parted ways with 7-8 years ago is apparently gay. Just like you, this doesn't bug me one bit. But I was initially very shocked because he used to be a total ladies man (like myself ) and we used to fight over the same girls constantly.

I've also caught up with old friends from the past who have COMPLETELY changed their life's ambition. I had one friend whose parents pushed him relentlessly to play football and go pro, and it was his #1 priority and he loved it more than life. We went to different high schools because he wanted to pursue a career in football and get recruited. I saw him at the lake about a year ago though and we got chatting, and it turns out he has completely quit football and he now golfs and smokes weed. He was SO anti drug back when I knew him too. That was a huge shock to me too :s

The reality is that as time goes on, people change a lot. Especially when you are at a young age. The teen years are some of the most influential and life-altering years of your life. Many people grow tremendously during this period and become the people they will be for the rest of their lives. So it really shouldn't be a big surprise that when you run into a childhood friend who is now a man, that they have changed immensely

in elementary school i had this dude in my class who was kind the artistic kinda guy, real wiry, thin and small, big pushover, when going to middle school he went to an art and drama school.

then sometime in highschool he adds me on facebook, turns out he's now a linebacker for the best football team in my city. i was sure as shit surprised.

 

One of the people in my year from school is a transvestite now, as I bumped into him in an alternative / metal clothing shop. Scared the living shit out of me.

 

Many of the girls I knew in middle school and high school ended up getting pregnant or married. By "many" I mean six or seven. One of them had a baby when she was 16, and now she's pregnant again at 19-20. She's married too apparently. I know a few people who have committed suicide. I've only been out of high school for a year, so the changes aren't too dramatic yet. Most of the kids who I hung out with are still in college, living normal young lives.
People are probably surprised when they find me on Facebook and see that I'm in a relationship with a girl. Either that or they don't think it's serious.

 

None I've found have had any interesting changes such as yours. That's really strange how much people can change over time, especially growing up.

 

Ya, I knew a lot of people in high school that were pregnant at the time. And by "a lot" I mean double digits. Several of them no one ever expected to get pregnant. They were very successful, nice honor students with good parents. That along with their personalities made it very hard to believe that they were pregnant. On the other hand, there are some people that I'm very surprised never got pregnant, or if they did they had an abortion.
