i practice ribeiro jiu jitsu and i'd say it is very effective. Just don't get knocked out trying to take down you're opponent and you'll be fine.

My instructor started out his fighting career using muay thai then began practicing under saulo ribeiro in brazilian jiu jitsu. Needless to say he is a bad ass now.

Practicing any type of fighting > no fighting experience
