And I believe, what Clash means is modern-day music know how the modern society is and they sing about it where as the old school artist talked about their "modern" day society which is no longer modern today. They are not as meaningful as modern day music but that does not mean, every old school song is like this. Some talk about the troubles of the old revolutionary times such as racism, etc and some talk about the trouble even people nowadays go through.
