Guide to the "Drop Punt" in rugby.

Many years ago the spiral was the only choice of kick for touch or gaining territory. The advantage of the "drop punt" is that it is more accurate when executed properly and provides more consistency. Fewer variables affect it.

    Now to the guide:

The ball is held perpendicular to the ground, that is, it points up and down. Hold the ball on either side and gently guide it with the right foot if a right foot kicker. I am a natural left foot kicker so I guide it with my left hand. Make sure that the chest is front on and that the shoulders are square on to the target. Hold the ball in front of the kicking leg and make sure the chest is over the planted foot, if the ball is not held over the kicking leg, it means that your leg will have to come inward to connect with ball and a sliced kick will probably result. The bottom of the ball should connect with the top of the foot just behind the toes and the follow through is crucial. Follow the leg through its arc and keep the toes of the kicking foot pointed towards the target.
