You can build an i7 2600k for about $650 that can run roughly 10-15 simbas overclocked to 4.5.

A lot of people get dedicated servers but I would stay away. A decent server will cost you around $250 a month while an i7 2600k will keep it's value. Heck sometimes you will even find a buyer that will pay more then what you paid for it. Most $100-150 servers are no match for the 2600k when running simba bots.

It's pretty expensive to get a Dedicated Server, especially one for Simba. Simba seems to take up a lot more RAM and in particular CPU compared to a few of the old bots like Powerbot, etc. If you plan on running 10 bots at a time, they could crash a fair bit too unless you're paying for a really expensive dedicated Server.

I'd follow Franks suggestion if you can buy your own PC, it's cheaper in the long run and obviously, you get to keep it/sell it off afterwards.

Personally I would get 8-16gb. Running simba I doubt you would go over 8gb. But Ram being so cheap you might as well go for 16gb for about $70-90.

A new computer would be good in the long run. This is because after you've actually bought the computer, you still have the electricity bill to pay. So I would choose:

New computer - Long term investment
Dedicated server - Short term investment

Simba bots generally take 250-500 megabytes of ram, depending on the Script. I was able to get to Mining scripts running on a VPS with 1GB of ram.

Not true. I can easily find a $130/month server 8gb, which would run 12 bots easily (back in rsbots.net time). Not sure how Simba works though.

@ OP: Assuming botting lasts for a long time buying the computer will save you more money in the long run. But if it doesn't do you have other uses for it?

Also when I ran a bot farm I personally never bought a server over 8GB. They seemed to be more unstable, and if you are running the bots over night it would suck to have 30 bots shut off compared to 10 (if 1 server were to go down). Of course it costs more though.

I'd actually wait and decide after Optimus occurs, cause you never know if there will be some kind of setback for Simba

Yes, rsbot an easy 12 but simba you're looking at 4 for your $130 server. My old $450 builds ran 20-26 rsbuddys/rsbots. I could be wrong but I think the only public bot people are gold farming reliably on is Simba.

Given the stability of bots at the moment, I recommend neither (as a previous user has suggested)

On the other hand, no one wants to hear that, so I recommend going with the computer. As long as you have the internet connection to back it up (shouldn't be very difficult, as it doesn't require THAT much bandwith to play) a decent (and still inexpensive) computer WILL hold its value (and likely you will gain far more use out of it) far better than renting a few vps's.

My reasoning behind this is as follows:

    1. Most mass bot-farms fail. Cold, hard, fact. If they didn't, everyone would be doing it... easy cash right?
    2. If the bots go down, you're screwed. If you have the computer, their are multiple other ways of monetizing it.
    3. If you haven't already figured this out - running 10+ bots is not nearly as easy as it may seem. While I do not know what bots you plan on monetizing, I do know that constant hours of a)fixing bot problems b)selling the gold c)maintaining everything in the meantime - can be rather stressful/difficult to keep up.

If you have the computer, think of it as more of a longterm investment. Far less of a chance of you being stuff with something that you can't use, which in my eyes, is the worst possible outcome.

Anyone disagree? I love debates :)
