Why?

Have you ever wondered why santas and mask sets are all cheaper then party hats i thought they all were released on the same day and why is green mask less then blue mask why does everything blue in runescape be so dear like torva blue mask blue party hats why why why! I need someone who has good knowledge in runescape history to fill me in.

 

party hats are from 2001 and santas are from 2002...there are also a lot less phats (i believe) then santas/hween masks....the blue thing is pretty obvious...more people like the color blue then other colors...it being more popular = higher price.

 

Its also just really about supply and demand of the products. More people wanted party hats and there was less of them = Prices go higher.

 

From my understanding I think there is a lot less Partyhats that santa/masks. Also Partyhat were the first rare.

Blue p hat was actually the most common one in RSC before the duping bug. It was barely duped because of how common it was and in turn it became the rarest one after Jagex fixed the bug.

 

Pretty obvious its about how much of them there is, which is why there called "rares". Also p-hats look much better in my opinion.

 

There are more of them in the game, I believe.

 

Simply supply and demand, there are FAR more santas and stuff over phats.

Boggles my mind as to why they are expensive in the first place, its purely a "prestige thing" like a veblen good in economics.

The more expensive the price, the greater the 'prestige' demand.

 

Maybe most people didn't buy blue rares so over the years they have became more rare making them more expensive.

It's because they were the most common back before the duping, so they weren't duped as much because people tried to dupe the more valuable rares.
Also, it might have something to do with color... Blue\Red > green lolz

 

Partyhats are older, someone did not read RuneScape Wiki.

 

When Partyhats were released, people did not know they would become rares, so they did not try to hoard them. When they were released, many of them were sold to general stores or dropped since many people thought they were worthless. By the time h'weens and santas were released, people understood the concept of rares so many people tried to grab them as soon as they were dropped. (Also, there were more players in runescape in 2002 versus 2001, so more people were there to pick up the items).

As for the colors, in a perfect world, they would all have the same rarity. However, it turns out that green h'weens must have been picked up more often than blue and red ones. Also, red h'weens were bought more than the other masks due to people thinking it completed a dragon set better than a dragon med helm (dragon full didn't exist). The people who bought the red masks at the time eventually quit as they were spread out throughout the runescape population more than the other masks, so their prices will be higher.People like keeping historical prices as well, they rarely change in terms of ratio, although they do sometimes.

Pumpkins were the first rare actually And technically, christmas crackers were before party hats.

The price is all about demand, people like blue better than purple which is blue is more expensive.

I got most of that from various parts of rune wiki, some now dead threads and some active threads from Items Forum (status threads, threads made by ShuttleDuck, and threads such as this one that were made in Items), and simply connecting the dots and making conclusions from the information that is available.

That's not the reason blue is worth more than purple, it's because purple was duped the most during the phat dupe (as it was the most rare/wanted one at the time). As a result blue became worth more than purples. Nowadays, blue's are also considered a completing the game goal. Blue's are also the most hoarded of the phats, or at least this is what is speculated by much of Items Forum.

As you said, you want to know where I get some of these facts from, an example would be when CLS Product made a thread selling 22 blue phats. As a result, EVERY phat temporarily dipped, blues the most however (you can ask about this event in the phat status thread if you'd like). The fact that all phats dipped from one person claiming to sell his stock (I'm not even sure if he ended up selling any) shows the weakness that the blue phats have, that they are held up by imaginary demand. However, based off the fact that it has been near untouchable for years shows that this fake demand can act very real

 

There are many more PartyHats in RS than Masks/Santas. Also, Phats came out in 2001, masks and santas in 2002. Plus, people like the blue so higher demand is going to mean higher prices.
