Do you think arranged marriages should be illegal?

When a family members chooses someone for you to marry and you are basically forced to marry them and can't refuse.

There are two types of arranged marriage.

The first is when your family members choose someone for you to marry and you are basically forced to marry them and can't refuse.

The second is exactly the same except they ask you if you want to marry the person they have chosen or not.

In my opinion marriages where you are forced and have no say should be illegal.

95% of the marriages in my family were arranged so I really don't see anything wrong with arranged marriages. If tomorrow my parents found someone who they want me to get married to. If I thought the person was suitable I would marry.

Forced Marriages.

Arranged marriages should be kept legal, though, I personally wouldn't partake in such an arrangement, to each their own, so long as nobody is forced in anyway.

Forced marriages on the other hand should be illegal. No one has the right to force you to do anything against your will. Forced marriage implies coercion, and in order to coerce in this circumstance, it would require either physical abuse, or psychological torment. For example, the parents may physically abuse their child for refusing, or, the parents may sequester the child entirely for defying their wrath.

It is one thing to claim that this is a 'custom', however, you would need to justify this custom with something else other than tautology or tradition.

 

I thought forced marraiges are already illigal in most countries atleast... I guess it's down to some foolish cultural practices =/

But I don't think Arranged marraiges should be illigal. The person can have a choice to marry still and I'm sure if they got married and found they weren't compatible, they'd split.

 

Your argument is not valid. You are forced to do many things against your will by the government. You are forced to pay tax, you are forced to abide by your country's laws. If you do not comply with this you are simply dealt with accordingly. I doubt you complain about this.

It is usually Muslims who encourage and perform arranged marriages. The simple solution in my opinion is to have them go back to their own country permanently and perform these marriages there if they are in the USA/Europe for example. If they are in their own country already then I couldn't care less. You simply can't attempt to do make arranged marriages illegal for people who do not reside in your country.

There is a huge problem at the moment in the UK with sham marriages. These people are attempting to gain access to a country which they should not be allowed to join.

In conclusion, I think that arranged marriages should be dealt with more harshly in the UK. These marriages are already illegal here. I don't really care much for other countries, they can do what they want.

 

Firstly; there are many different religions and culture that endorse in "arranged" marraiges. The fact you'd try to pin point only Muslims(without even knowing what "arranged marraige" means in their faith) is just narrow minded thinking.

The above shows the vasteness of arranged marraiges. "Forced" marraiges are rare in any society today, though it does happen in some cultures unfortunatly.

How can a Muslim go back to his country, when a Muslim is not a culture, not a race and not a nationality? This is an ignorant thing to say; where are the "white American/european" Muslims suppose to go? Where are those suppose to go who were born on the land? I mean, what difference does it make if YOU came on a Boat and they came on a plane?

I think you don't know what the difference between forced (which is illegal) and arranged marraige is, atleast not the "Muslim" one.

I will tell you an interesting fact though; the high number of divorces in America are not good for society. And suprise suprise, it's the majority "love/dating" marraiges that end up in divorce compared to a very small minority of arranged marraiges have ended up in divorce.

Not that I care for any of the two, both imo are fine and as long as the couple both approve of the marraige, then there's absolutly nothing wrong with that.

 

You can always say no at the altar. If family punishes you for saying no, That's almost certainly a crime

 

I wouldnt want to marry someone that i didnt like at all just because of my parents.

 

Marriage is about the bonding love between two people, not the upgrading of your families social ranking. So yes, it should be illegal.

Arranged marriages shouldn't be illegal. The person that is looking for a significant other always has the the choice of declining the person that the parents have chosen for them. They also can find someone suitable for them, but they have to be accepted by the parents. Arranged marriages are really not that different than regular marriages, it's just for people that don't like to go out there and look for someone.

It definitely shouldn't be illegal...it's a part of their culture. However, whether you agree with it or not is your own decision.

I personally wouldn't ever agree to an arranged marriage. I don't feel it's right forcing someone to marry someone they don't know.

 

I do, constantly. Being forced to do something through coercive violence is cruel and barbaric.

 

If you can say yes or no its fine.

If you are Forced, no that don't fly here.

I boils down to parents wanting whats best for their child, however there is lines you do not cross.

If yes, then ban religion from being taught to underage children.

If someones religion/culture is going to force children to marry someone when they grow up and you ban that, then ban forced belief systems that brainwash children who believe it 100% when they grow up.

Just my thoughts.

 

Arranged marriages are mostly done with the approval of the groom and bride. Some are done forcefully, which I don't see how anyone can do - if your forced to get married what the fuck you'd just run away and not come back

 

OT: As long as it's not breaking any human basic rights, then By all means. I would much rather have someone suggest me to marry someone than to forcefully make me.
