Wonderful guide, I never knew about hovering, I just always clicked it because they can only get your IP from clicking it, and my account is safe if all they have is my IP address. Unless there is something I am unaware of, which there very well might be. Back to the subject, I just clicked it and if I had to log in, it was fake. I would also look at the address bar to see if it was the same as the one that was in my email, this is a failed version of the hover technique lol.

No Jagex does email you as I noticed when I compared a real address change from Jagex and one from a phisher.

Well, usually I would post this guide in the UE section, but I think it'll do more good here.

The two main phishers I'll talk about in this guide are: The ones posted on sythe and the email phisher. These are the most common types of phisher and the ones who affect members of Sythe the most.

The forum phisher: This phish is essentially a new member (usually joining the same day as posting the phish) making a thread in the Runescape section about topics which will change Runescape in a big way, they include a paragraph of information to make it look real, and then provide a link to the source of the information. Since the story is fake; there is no real link to provide, and thus, here comes the phisher. Instead of linking you to runescape.com website they have slight variations of it like nunescape.com. Notice the "n" replacing the "r"? That's how they trick you. Once you're on the phishing site - it'll look exactly like runescape.com except that it will require you to log in - this is how they gain your runescape username and password. If you press log in after entering your username and password they gain your password and it takes only time before they change your password (even if you enter your password you can change it straight away and be fine).

The email phisher: This is done by sending an email (usually about your account gaining some sort of free items). They'll have an email which looks very professional (like how Jagex sends emails) including information about your account and the things you've done wrong (or good). In the information they link you to what is meant to look like runescape.com, but like the forum phisher they send you to another website which requires you to log in, and once again, them gaining your password and username.

How to avoid them: Well here comes the guide part.

Step 1) Here is an example of what a phisher looks like. Notice how the website linked looks real? That's how they get you to click on the link to give away your username and password. What really happens is there is an option on the forum to link words to the website and instead of it linking you to the website you see on the outside they put it as a different website.

Step 2) How to check the website. The first step is to put your mouse over the link (DO NOT CLICK IT; JUST HOVER OF IT). Then look down the bottom of your screen where it tells you how much of the site has loaded. Down there will show you the link of the website you are going to go if you click it.

Notice how the link you are hovering is different to the link down the bottom (the r is placed with a n). That link down the bottom is the phishing link and brings you to the place where you log in.

That's basically how you do it on a forum and avoid those pesky phishing link.

Email phishers: It's basically the same steps as forum phisher, but a lot more realistic; that's why I'm showing you this way as well.

Step 1) The phishers will entice you to click on the email by having a curious looking thread title, such as the one below. Clicking on them won't do any harm to your runescape account.

Step 2) Once in the email it will look something like this. Take note of the email address. It looks real and I would have fallen for it, but that isn't Jagex's email address - so using the hover method works best when telling if it's a phishing link.

Step 3) Use the hover method and take a look at the link, instead of saying "runescape" it's "runesc4pe" (sythe block the fake website), and yet again, that's how you avoid the phish.

I hope now you can tell if it's a phishing link or not and avoid being phished.

Amazing guide, no wonder your a user educator! I always get e-mails from phisher when i bump my thread which is like level 137 or when i state i am buying or selling gold. The E-mail i usually get says my account has been infracted.
