Market before Our Community?

Why the switch? I personally don't like it at all. You can't see the sythe news and other important things right away. Why was it changed?

I imagine it was changed due to the desire to emphasize the market aspect of the site to attract and retain new members.

 

I would have personally preferred the community being asked their opinion about this change as it drastically effects everyone. Perhaps the news section should be moved to the links section so that all news is obvious.

 

Having to take a fraction of a second to scroll down further is hardly drastic : /

 

It just should be noticeable.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of this change, but whatever. I guess I was too used to the older layout.

 

It doesnt effect me much more at all. Just gonna have to get used to it.

The kernel of this site's visits come from marketeers. When SuF talks about asking ''the community'', he refers to the users that actively involve themselves in community discussions, which, for the record, happen to be very few. This site is centered around its markets, and its users are, by a vast majority, market-users. We have simply reorganized the forum so that the forums are generally in a position reflecting their level of activity. This is the natural and appropriate way in which a forum should be structured. If the site is utterly dependent on Runescape commerce, it makes absolute sense for the pertinent section to be at the very top of the forum - it allows the majority of Sythe.org users (marketeers) to access it easily.

There exists a link at the top of the page which redirects users to the Community sections, and, after all, it is, as Nate points out, simply a matter of scrolling down the page. When considering the feedback and suggestions put forward on this site, it's important to note that they're largely all made by users whose primary alleigance is to the Off-Topic forums. This is not at all an accurate portrayal of popular desire, given that the Off-Topic frequenters constitute only a tiny portion of the userbase.

I urge you all to consider the effects of the reintroduction of free trade on this site. They will be drastic. This site has the potential for yet further expansion, and free trade presents many opportunities which, collectively, we ought to capitalise on. I am not a Market user and this development will be confusing for me, like the rest of you. However, the development will be silently appreciated by the marketeers that make up the kernel of the userbase. Whilst they may not involve themselves in community discussions, they will find that access to what they - the majority - want has been made simpler.

Rather than lamenting about the second increase in required scrolling time that you're going to have to endure, consider that the change allows the majority - and new users - to access their section of destination most simply. I may be one of the users that is affected by the slight increase in scrolling time, but, as a pioneer of this site's expansion and betterment, I completely support the development. SuF, whilst right about the change being drastic, was misconstruing why it happens to be drastic. It is a drastic development as it allows the majority of users simplified access to their primary destination. You do not unilaterally represent all of this site's users - in fact, you represent a distinct minority whose demands are ubiquitous and tend to be neglectful of the majority of Sythe.org users - the marketeers, without whom this site would not continue to exist.

 

If you guys don't like the extra space before the news section, you can collapse the forums above it.

But why change some thing was perfectly fine. Now you have to collapse market and runescape just to see community. I don't see how this is good in any way.

 

This benefits the vast majority of our traffic, which is market users who couldn't care less about the community discussion and other things.

User satisfaction is our number one priority. This only helps the majority of our users.

 

Concisely put. This summarises my earlier post. We've spent far too long trying to cater for the 0.0001% whiny minority of this site's userbase - frankly it's time to move this site forward and expand it further. This can be achieved only through bypassing the endless factional issues and bettering the site for those that make it - the marketeers, who are a distinct and underrepresented majority.

 

I don't like it but if it helps the site might was well keep it. >.<

 

The only thing I'm bothered about, is the scroll bar at the bottom of the page is because its now too wide, previously before the change it wasn't. Please fix this?

Sythe, is user-configurable display order out of the question? Just thought of that while sitting here at this immensly boring math lecture.

 

The change seems quite drastic to me. I understand the fact that you can click on the 'our community' subforum and view the community subforums from there, but I liked the old order better. Sure, those forums don't get as much postings or attention as the market, but I just feel like the site news, community, suggestion, and feedback subforums should be near the top. They take up little space and are more important to welcoming users, as well as site and staff improvement. With the new change, the suggestion and feedback subforums will see even less traffic and personally, those are quite important things.

With all of that being said, I fully understand that the market drives this site. A majority of users come here for the market and I understand that. I just don't think it will have a major effect in keeping or bringing users. I've seen arguments such as 'you can deal with that small scroll down' for example. Then why can't everyone deal with a small scroll down to get to their beloved markets as it used to be? I'm not trying to argue, I'm just trying to explain my opinion. I doubt it will get changed back, but that's what I think.
