    Programming section

Well, to put it bluntly, the programming section is basically dead. I've been trying recently to revive it a bit, but it's really hard to do all on my own. It would be really helpful if we could get more people to get active in the programming section. Even if you aren't a programmer, I still encourage you to come and check out the forums; you never know maybe it will turn out to be something your interested in!

Now, I know just posting this and telling people to come to the programming forum isn't going to do much, if anything; that's the point of this thread- to come up with some ideas that will help bring some members to the forum.

What we really need is a few good programmers that can start contributing and helping people out when they need it. This is what we need first, with these people there to help out, then people with less programming knowledge can come in and get help and learn some new stuff. But we can't do this without some people with programming knowledge.

Another thing that could be done is some sort of contest, or something. Now, I know this has probably been done before, and didn't work, but who says it can't be tried again? All we need is some dedicated people to help with this and it can be successful.

To sum this up, what the programming section needs right now is a couple more people that are knowledgeable in programing to come and contribute some original sources, tutorials, or just any help whatsoever, this will attract people who want to/are learning to program because there will actually be something there to work with.

I am willing to put forth as much effort as needed to make this work, but I can't do it alone. So if you have any ideas whatsoever, or want to help out please post here, I'm open to just about anything right now.

I've been interested in programming for a while now, I might finaly decided to quit slacking off and come down there! I'll make an attempt with you.

Maybe we could hold contests? With small prizes.

You should never be too scared to ask about something, especially something you're interested in; it could be your area of expertise!

Not a whole lot of people know much about programming. Most of our users are just here for Runescape-related things such as trading, discussion, etc., so reviving it would be hard. You can always try to generate activity there with threads and tutorials that'll help people get that section going.

I support more activity and initiatives to get the section going again, but I know nothing about Programming, never even posted in the section before. How do you interest someone like me into getting active in that section? Perhaps to start a new Programming Mod could be appointed...

I would love for this to happen. I will do anything to try an contribute and help in any way.

edit: i have an idea. what if we did something like project euler? ( projecteuler.net/index.php?section=problems ) We could have a group of people that come up with complicated problems and the only way to solve it is by programming the problem. You will get a point or 2 points or whatever depending on difficulty of the problem. When you sumbit the problem you should sumbit your code and your answer. This is so you just don't google the answer for it.

I will be posting some tutorials and stuff soon, but I won't be able to do it all myself, I need a few people to help out.

This is part of the plan, I/we just need more contributors.

You get people interested by making it fun. So contests/competitions/etc? Also I agree with the moderator statement.

    Thank you for your willingness.

I currently have a friend who was banned here on Sythe about 2 years ago for something trivial (I think like spreading referral links) and I am going to try and get him pardoned/etc. He is pretty knowledgeable in programming and stuff that he would be of great help to the section.

I'm happy so see there are at least a couple people interested in this.
Also, I realized this thread could probably be in feedback, instead of here.

I don't believe the "intelligence" of most users on these forums could be used to do any type of programming, all those who were able have left.

Unless you teach the 12 yr old runescape kiddies how to program a bot or something related to runescape or games in general I do not see there small attention span's being able to learn even the most basic of programming.

Never the less I wish you luck.

World Domination, I admire your determination to revive a dead section, but sadly, it's always easier said than done.

As you already know, most of the Sythe members came here for the RS Black Market. The only game they've ever played in their lives is RS, and that won't change anytime soon. If you attempt to engage in a conversation about gaming with them, all they'll talk about is popular franchises like COD, Battlefield and CS. They aren't really avid gamers as some of them claim they are. This explains why sections like Other Games got some activity pumped into it a few days before Black Ops got released, but soon died again afterwards.

Similarly, the reason the Programming section is dead because of two reasons:

    1) The amount of knowledge users have about programming
    2) The number of active users that actually care about it (quick guess; about ten?)

The Programming section is like a dead corpse. No matter how much you try to heal it, you can't do it. You can't bring back the soul that inhabited the body.
