need help with the sound of my computer

hey let me start by saying that i bought my comp in 2002 and it is still workign great not that fast but as good as youd hope. anyway for some reason my sound just stopped working about a week or 2 ago and i couldnt figure out why so i dragged my mouse over the pic of a speeker with an X by it and it says No Audio Output Device installed so i tryed restarting the comp then installing the updates that microsoft had made and then looking to see if the driver needed any updates manually but my comp said it was working perfectly. then i restarted it again and it came back the entire time i was on it then i shut it down for the night. after i got home from school i opened it up buy again i had no sound even though the day before it worked... and know the story has caught up with real time and i am writing this. please help a brother out and if you can tell me whats going on and how to fix it. in advance THANKS!

 

It would help if you shed some like on the model of the sound card and whether or not it's on-board.

 

how do i find that out? its a laptop and i do believe that its attached to the board... its also windows vista and and hp pavilion entertainment PC. if that helps idk also its still broken

 

It could however be your sound card, I used to have the same problem, I installed updates to my sound card and it also fixed it for about a day, but then it wouldn't work again, just like you have said, SO, I purchased a brand new sound card and put it in my computer (I am running Windows Vista) and my sound worked again. I don't know and I am unsure if this will work with you, but please don't hold me responsible if you purchase a new sound card and it does not work.

 

well were would be a good place to buy a sound card?

It's not worth it. If your laptop is almost 9 years old I would consider replacing it.

 

im considering it but am waiting for college so i will have a reason to buy a new laptop.
