    Police vs Civilians

What should happen when a police officer breaks a law:

    • Get special treatment?
    • Be punished more severely?

I think they get suspended from the force for a period of time or if really serious, kicked off.

If you're a Chicago cop, it just kind-of goes under the table.

I think they should be punished the same as everybody else. Depending on the crime, it should cost them their job.

He should be in trouble, fired etc depending on what the crime was. No person should be above the law. He/She SHOULD know better not to break the law if that person is trying to help us from the law.

In most cases the police with try to justify what happened or it will go under the table.

It depends on what it is,.

If a police officer commits any felony at all, his balls will get nailed to the wall. We trust the police officers with deadly weapons, security clearances, access to drugs, etc. It only makes sense that we punish him more severely because he was given the trust of society. If a police officer speeds in his cruiser, whatever. Speeding is ridiculous anyway. These police officers are heavily trained in driving, so they're fine. A lot of the time you see a cruiser speeding, he's probably doing it for a reason anyway.

    Punished more severely of course.

If your taught to enforce the law, and are trusted by your state to do so, and you run around breaking it, you should know better.

Just because they risk their life's for others in certain cases doesn't mean they should be treated specially. They chose to risk it, no one made them.

Punished as usual, and suspended/booted off depending the severity.

They should be punished more severely, as they have taken oath to PROTECT AND SERVE the law, and they have a very extensive knowledge of what things are legal and illegal, as well as knowing plenty of loopholes. Treason, imo.

    Police vs Civilians

People will start questioning the police if an officer breaks the law.
The police has one simple job, and thats to maintain the law and make sure that no-one breaks the law.

By having an officer breaking the law, It'll raise some questions
    - How can the police try to maintain the law when they cant even prevent themselves from breaking it?

But at the end of the day, the officers are just human like everyone else.
The only difference between them and a civilian is that the officer has 4(?) years of education in maintaining the law and a police degree.

Im both for punishing more severly and a punishment like everyone else.
More severly - because they're job is to maintain the law.
Like everyone else - because they're human just like everyone else.

And for the special treatment - Hellz no!

Since when were you under the impression?
    Be punished more severly, ofcourse.
I don't about the USA, but here in Norway a police officers role has an impact on the society.
Norway itself is a weak, yet rich country.

    It depends,

Are they on duty or off ?

If they're on duty, were they doing it to prevent another crime, much worse one, from happening ?

If off duty, what does it involve? Drugs, Abuse, Assault? The list goes on.

They are the "man" so they are well aware of their actions and the consequences that follow, but the punishment shouldn't be worse only because, we as a society believe that every man was|are created equal regardless of color, race, or religion.
So even though they do know what they are doing, they still are considered equal, and shouldn't receive a harsher punishment, but should instead be prevented from being a law enforcement official .

    Police vs Civilians

I do believe it depends on the circumstances.

On duty: He should be tried as any normal civilian should and depending on the severity of the crime be suspended or fired from his job.

Off duty: Again, should be tried as any normal civilian should. His job, however, should not be in danger.

The problem is that the police do as a matter of fact abuse their rights. If for example, you and a cop got into an argument somewhere secluded and he ended up getting mad, he could beat you over the head with his nightstick, arrest you and call it assault. Why? Because who in their right mind would believe a civilian over a cop in that situation? They tailor everything around them with the respect they've earned with the badge.

I however, do believe the police should be treated equally as civilians. For example, if I were a firefighter on duty and I broke into a house and stole jewelery, I would most likely lose my job. Now if the same situation happened, but I was not on duty, I would most likely be able to keep my job. Why should cops be treated any different than a banker, cashier or McDonald's griller? By having the general population act as if they are different, they're just contributing to the whole problem.

    --------

That last bit may have been off-topic, but I felt it should be said.
