I'm just finishing my Software Design degree, and now I'm considering taking a four year law degree.

The degree is relatively inexpensive ~$34k and at one of the better law schools in Australia.

Should I go for it? What think ye?

I think it really depends on where you want to take the Software side. Because you could go after a career that involved both sides, software and law. Or are you looking to take a new one because the software side doesn't interest you anymore?

They both interest me equally. At the moment I am treating law like a history degree; essentially something I want to take for my own pleasure, but not necessarily something I want to use for my career. But such is liable to change in the future...

What field of law are you thinking of specializing in. Maybe a 4 year degree isn't necessary if it's for personal interest, possibly a simple Associates? (I'm sure Australia works differently, but a 2 year equivalent degree would be suitable if it's not for professional work.)

A lot of law school pertains to very basic forms of law; that is, that it focuses on preparing you for a career as a lawyer (which is relatively nonacademic) rather than exploring and studying law itself. Because this is not necessarily your career choice, you may find yourself quite bored because of the lack of the scholastic approach. In addition, 4 years is a large chunk of time: it's up to you whether or not you want to occupy those years with law, but just remember how long it will go.

I'm not sure to what you're referring here. Do you mean critical thinking skills, court room procedure etc? There only appears to be a minimum of that, most of it is actually studying law qua law.

    These are the core courses:

    LAWS1111 2 Legal Method
    LAWS1112 2 Law and Society
    LAWS1113 2 Law of Torts A
    LAWS2111 2 Law of Contract A

Eh, it's possible. It costs me almost nothing (~$8k per year) if I get bored of it or find my calling elsewhere I can just suspend it.

The way the Australian unviersity scam... er... system is structured makes it actually cheaper for me to do a full LLB than to do an applied law masters (which I was originally going to do.)

And for specialization: Commercial law, quite possibly.

    Education is power.

Having a law degree would benefit you so much sythe.

I would SO go for it if you're willing, capable, and you would enjoy it.

If not, congratulations on the software design degree..that's a good accomplishment in itself.

Id say go for it Sythe, your obviously a very smart guy, and this could be good for you. Where abouts in Australia and you looking to get this? Plus, if you do this, paying 8k a year will be nothing. Compared to what you will be earning, but dont leave us. :)

There are many many many software designers in today's economy, there are also many lawyers but if you believe in yourself, then I would recommend entering for the degree as a lawyer. This would overall be the best effect on your future and the choice to enter will be best for your overall future.

If the price isn't an inconvenience to you I'd 100% say go for it. Who knows, even if you don't use it in the near future it could come in hand later down the line.

You live in Australia? Go for the law degree in my opinion. Where will you be studying it at? A college or a University here? Because all universitys have their pros and con's. But imo, id rather a career in law then something related to software.

Jesus christ, 34k for law school? THAT'S IT?? Damn man, do it! I'm working into getting into law school (going for B/A in economics, minor in Political science) then applying for law school, which I'm not even promised a spot in. I'll be far over my head in debt >_< If I were in your position I'd do it man.
