Guide to the " Spiral " in rugby.

This may not be the first kick of choice but when properly struck, it still would win any award for good looks. There is nothing better to watch then a perfectly struck spiral. The advantage of the spiral over the drop punt ( refer to my last guide) is the aerodynamics-- The ball spinning through the air gives it more distance and the same spinning action means its faster through the air. It's used when you want to get the ball to some place in a hurry-- to beat a fullback or wing running across in anticipation, for example. AN advantage of the spiral is that it skids of the turf nicely and can add metres to your kick. There is also a kick called the “spiral bomb" that isn't often used in matches but when it is, it creates havoc among defenders because of its unpredictable flight and bounce.​

Now to the guide:​

The principles of the spiral are the same as for the drop punt, except for how the ball is held. For a left foot kicker, the ball is held at angle with the left hand at the back for guidance. Think of a clock face and think of Five past seven. The right hand should be at about where the ones are, and the left hand at about where the seven is. Keep the body straight and the chest over the kicking foot. The top of your foot should connect with the sweet spot and you need to kick through the ball, following through with the toes pointing at the target, the same as with the “Drop Punt ".​
